30-35

Blimey, you trying to fry your fish? Mine is at about 23-24 degrees. It all depends which heater you have.

If you twist it one way the heater should click on, all you need to do is twist it back until it clicks off, then twist it a bit more until you get the right temperature!

I turned it down 2 clicks last night before i went to bed and its dropped down to 29 to hopefully it will drop more today or i will turn it down another few clicks.

Strange thing is, it was at 26/27 in my friends house. We moved the tank but didnt adjust anything on the heater and now its up at 30

Be careful when dropping temperatures. I would leave 7 days between lowering at 1 degree a day to reduce the chance of whitespot. which is caused by temperature fluctuation.

Is there fish in the tank already? Just drop the temp very slowly, a couple of degrees each day, as long as the fish are healthy, they should be fine

Yeah there is quite a few in it now. Does one click on the knob on the top of the heater in the tank generally drop it one degree?

I don't know mate, it all depends on what model heater you have. What you can do is remove the heater, put it in a 2 litre coke bottle or something with the lid cut off, then get the temp set right in there before you put it back in the tank.

Or another thing you can do is turn the knob right down to its lowest setting, wait for the tank to drop to the required temp (aim for 23-24 degrees), then very slowly turn the knob up until the heater clicks on.

That then should be your temp set!

also where you have put the tank will affect the temp, is it by a radiator, is it in direct sunlight and is your house warmer than your mates house. My 2 tanks (tropical and cichlid) are around 25-26c

I was thinking about leaving the lid open but the bala sharks have a temdancy to jump out and one of the suckers for some reason ever once and a while decides to fly up to the top and back down again. Is that normal lol?

Ive got mine on 29 degrees and have done for 18 months

Hotter water encourages fish growth, so I was told.

Not had any problems anyway

thats cause they are probs too hot/lack of oxygen and going up for air even just proping the lid open and 1" will let the heat escape

my ruby & silver sharks like it around 25c

but my corys & hoplo catfish like it slightly warmer any lower than 25c they get lazy and never ever move obviously cause bottom of the tank will be cooler than the top, i would also advise you have a good 5"+ airstone as this will disturb the water surface and allow the water to absorb oxygen

I turned the temp right down on the heater and it is about 26 now which is alright but i think i will get a new heater anyway so i can get it down to 25.

What airstone do you recommend?

Thats it mate! I personally have my tank at about 23 degrees, but it all depends on what fish you have.

As said below it all depends on the fish you have. Turning the heat up a little can encourage certain types of fish to breed. I have Snakeheads, Oscars, Tinfoils and a Redtailed catfish and I find the best temp ranges between, 23 and 25.

I'm looking into getting an aquarium for just 1 breed of fish, but the temperature needs to be regulated at around 18 degrees - is there any way of doing this as obviously when the room temperature is 30 degrees then the tank temperature will bein to rise slowly

depend on how warm your house is if you plan to have it in your living room at this time of yr my coldwater tanks sits at 20c with no central heating in winter it drops to 17-18c but when the heating is on in winter it has gone too 22c

so either put the tank somewhere cool already and regulate with a heater or have it in the lounge and buy a water chiller to get the temperature down

Was thinking a water cooler - the fish in question is an Axolotl, and it would be in my bedroom

Now the temp in here can reach upto 32 celcius when the telly is on (massive plasma) and the fish don't like that sort of high temperautre - they tend to stop working and sink

Good place for cooler/heater regulators for tanks?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/8-inch-airston...3A1%7C294%3A50

it sounds like you stat on your heater if fuked i had same problem i had 1 stuck at 30c even on very low setting, depending on size of tank i use a 100w heater in my Jewel 180litre tank but its in my lounge which is always warm anyhow and without heater hold temperature around 20-21c so it very rarely on and doesn't have to work hard to maintain the 24c its set at.
And with the tank having a fully closed lid it keep the heat in

This is mine: it 3x lemon tipped Tinfoil Barbs, ruby shark, silver shark, 6x congo tetras, 10+ plattys, 10+ mollys, royal plec, commom plec, gold nugget plec & joining them soon is 12 various Corys, 4x Hoplo Catfish & 2 glass catfish (the catfish are currently in my holding tank before i move them over to make sure they got no diseases) as my main tank has been 100% for 8 months and don't wanna risk disease.
plus i have 4 breeding mollys, plattys producing 30+ fry every 30 days which go into a baby tank

this is a video of it the Tinfoil Barbs are still growing as i have them sold to a local aquarium

i would suggest put the tank in a colder area and heat the tank rather than a cooler as it can expensive

But someone i know adapted 1 of those cheap style car fridges 12v/240v to cool his fish tank water he used a sump tank with the cooler in and used an external pump to pump the cooler water up into the main tank only saw the setup once and it look complex lol! and very homemade but it worked

Fair play - sounds a bit complex that I'll see if I can persuade the parents that another fish tank in the front room is a good idea

How come your room is so warm? If my room gets above 23 in roasted lol. I tend do have my windows open all the time anyway tho with my rad off.

The tank i have is in the living room. Sorted the temperature out today. I got a new heater and its slowly starting to drop nicely

On the heater i got it can be set to 16 degree.

I have seen some people put cucumber in for the suckers, is this good thing for them instead of always giving them the sinking food?

Yeah its good for them. They also like muscle too, i feed my stingray on frozen muscle (defrosted obviously, lol) and the plecs love it, better off dropping it in last thing at night for your plecs though.
