Who has a shotgun (update got my gun and licence)
I am just doing my forms to get my license, going to get a cabinet this week and get it bolted to the floor of my under stair cupboard.
So I will be looking for a 12g shotgun pref over and under but what makes and where to get one? begginers gun?

best to go to a gun shop they will be able to advice you on what "fits" you best, also you will be able to feel the different guns on offer,I would sugest you get the ferry accross to Poole and then drive to the Sportsmans gun centre nera Dorchester, unless you have a gun shop on the island

There is a gun shop over here but they are about Ł100 over priced on cheap guns and the higher the price the more overpriced they seem.
I have been using an over and under 30inch barrel and that feels comfortable but its the only one i have shot so could do with trying others TBH

erm thats how most people get into shooting sports. Thats certainly the way youd have to go to get an FAC IIRC, get supervised etc etc etc.
Ring them up, most gun clubs will have a newbies night every now and then or have a procedure for people interested in joining. Most decent gun clubs will be friendly enough to be more than happy to show you whats it all about.

i'd recommend a mossberg maverick 12g pump action. got it as my first gun about 3 months ago and think its the dogs dangles. i shoot crows pigeons and even clays with it. plus a pump action is THE safest type of shot gun you can buy as there dosent have to be any cartridges in the actual camber till just b4 you're ready to fire. The maverick takes 5 in the mag and 1 in the barrel so 6 is great when you're trying to nail a few lightning fast pigeons.

My father has a Webley & Scott 12 bore that he is intending to sell, I think he wants Ł2k for it. A good honest gun, it's side by side, as they all should be

so NO a pump action isnt suitable and you will never see one used on a clay range in the uk or by any field sportsman come to that

A pump action to shoot pigeons?
Where the hell do you go shooting?!!!
I go with my Dad quite regularly, and he has a few. Very addictive sport shooting clays, but watching him "cleaning up" for the local farmer is incredible....

pump action shotgun is for bank robberss and drug dealers,I se your in Ireland were obviously the rules are different to the UK as a 6 shot pump action or any auto shotgun which cab hold more than 3 shells is classed as section 5 which is a firearm, you need a totally differnt licence for one

Guns are like cars! There's tonnes to choose from!
If you've not got any experience, I would go to a local shooting grounds.
Firstly, they will be the best to advise on which guns are best suited to yourself.
Next, go to a gun supplier or a few and see what there is and the prices you've to pay.
Again, it's to do with your budget. They can range from Ł300 (for an OK one) to Ł30K+!!!
Once the gun is chosen, it will need to be made to fit you. A gunsmith or via a gun dealer can do that for you. If this is not done, it will be driving a Mini with the seats as far forward as possible and the driver being over 7' tall.
I'm left eye dominated, but right handed. The barrels and stocks are twisted slightly to suit my shoulder and line of sight.
Don't be tempted to buy the nicest gun as your best looking about first to see what there is, then choose one.
The whole side by side and over and under types are down to what you like best.
A Texan that I know loves using his side by side more than an over and under, even though the side by side concept came from the UK!
I started on a 20bore single barrel when I was in Primary school, but now a 12g is the only one I shoot.
I've never really shot my pump action much. It's usually only used for shoot off's as it's a challenge to get 3 shots fired whilst pumping in-between and letting the gun go off line for a second.
Happy shooting.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Trist l will be on the island in a few weeks and will be shooting, you are more than welcome to try my berreta 686E 30" multi choke.
It really is best to try different guns before you buy, l am not comfortable with Brownings as the way they fit is not comfortable to me so really it is each to there own. Also Avalon Guns of Street are very good. The gun shop on the island is steep like you said. I have a few older guns for sale but they really need a good service before being used seriously and would only want a few hundred for them, but would have to confirm that.
Let me know as like l said i will be down in a few weeks and will be shooting sporting on the downs

I go shooting with my brother in law on his farm just outside cork city. tons of fecking pigeons crapping all over the place. i find the pump action great, not just cause of the 6 shots but its really solid if your shooting em at a distance with no 4 magnums. In ireland, these shotguns r classed the same as any double barrell. only dif is if your game shooting theres a stopper to put in to only allow 2 cartridges in the mag for sport.

Well I got my gun and cabinet and licence all sorted.
I went to southern counties and what a place but was so dissapointed by the lack of help. I went up to one guy there and basically said I have a grand to spend and get my self set up. needed a left hand stock 30inch over and under. he handed me one by the barrels and said " there you go" and walked off. I asked if it was left handed and he just replied "its straight so will do" stood there trying to hold it up but just made to feel like a twat so we moved on to avalon guns after about 10mins of being in there.
when we turned up in avalon the owner came and asked if we wanted help I told him what I was after and we were there for 2 and a half hours loads of help and fed with coffee, showed correct way to hold it and which fitted me right and left with a mint Lanber sporting deluxe, skeet vest, cleaning kit, gun slip and cabinet. been out a few times to the local clay shoot and 1st time got 15 out of 100 lol amd 2 nd time 41 on a really windy day so I am getting there.

Not got an SGC but have an FAC (Never seen the appeal of shotguns).
You can order firearms from anywhere mate and get them shipped (usually ~Ł10) to an RFD on the IoW, who will then probably charge you Ł20 or so admin fee for putting it through their books, but sounds like it may be an option. Sportsman are OK, check out the forums though first like PigeonWatch and AirgunBBS (the FAC section).
Edit. Just read you got one now, sweet

I youre going game shooting many prefer a side by side but Ive never got on with them.
Single barrel 12 bores are ok, but Id still prefer the over and under.
IIRC you need to have the sleeved so they will only hold three, or run them on a firearms certificate, theyre not legal on a shotgun cert.

i used to shoot at southern counties shooting ground and its full of rich snobby wankers, i used to love turning up in my cossie pulling out my cheapo gun and beating them..........funn how they want to talk to you after youve shown them up with all there fancy guns and gear ect lol
i dont shoot anymore as it was costing me too much money to shoot at least 3 times a week and run a cossie but i did used to love shooting by the tank museum (perbeck shooting school) plus there is a good gun shoot in salisbury mate.
