£2k runarounds...
Looking to spend about £2k on a everyday car, it MUST be good on fuel, be quite modern and not dead slow.
Looking at Golf Tdi 110s with around 100k on them, not bothered by the high mileage but insurance is quite silly on them!
Any other suggestions?
Sure this has been asked before but cant find it on search.
Cheers

I've just spent 4 years driving a Vectra C and it was the worst car ever. It was so unreliable and the handling was a joke, I'd go for either a mondeo or something by VAG

I would be inclined to say an E36 BMW 328. I just bought one a month ago with full intentions of using it as a track car and absolutely love it and have decided to keep it as my road car for now.
As for fuel, it's not the best which may put you off but if driven sensibly it's not too bad. I think they are modern enough and still look fantastic. As for being dead slow, they certainly aren't. If you're struggling for diesel golf insurance however, i don't know how this would compare.
I picked my bm up for £1200 and cant fault it at all. Ok it could benefit from a full paint (small picky bits here and there and being red could do with a freshen up after 13 years) but other than that it is a fantastic car. You'll get a good one for less than 2K.
That's my tuppence, hope it helps.

20K+ Super Poster.
the 318 would be the better choice than the 328, but they demand a higher price and insurance is pretty expensive on E36 BMWs
i dont think youll get a decent E46 for that money

i have been looking and the surprise fron runner is a mazda 323 sport. can get them on 02/03 plate for about 2000-2500 look like bargains. i am going to test drive one this weekend to see what they are like. but apart from that i have been looking at an Octavia, Leon, Golf, the later 2 seem to demand more £££ though

I think it's a good choice too. £2k should get a good one. Remap and filter = 170bhp, as BMW restricted it pretty badly so as it didn't impose on some of the 6cyl models
and it's very good on fuel
and they look sweet as feck in black

I picked up an Eaton M45 supercharger last year, and a set of Jenvey Throttle Bodies and a manifold from Belgium, just haven't done anything with it yet as I'm in too deep with the Escort at the moment, so it's just in my unit doing not much at the minute. 60,000 miles, full main dealer service history etc etc etc. Want to keep it forever as I just think the E36 Coupe with subtle fettling is an amazing looking car and such a shame that many seem to be falling into chav hands now!

No BMW is good on fuel as stated! I used to have a nice E36 325 coupe and whilst it was nice, its too old for what I am wanting.
And I cant think of many worse cars than a 328 for an everyday car good on petrol
Cheers for the suggestions anyways, but looks like Golf Tdi for the win still.

None on E36coupe seemed to get better mpg than the M3 I had, so what's the point in no go and low mpg...
Don't fancy a big comfy passat?
Couldn't live with a golfs interior, and passats are cheaper.
Not exciting, but good runaround.

i have a focus TDDI, they are good cars - not the quickest off the mark but would happily do 500 miles to a tank at *ahem*9*ahem*0 miles an hour
Great car - it can be found on ebay in a few weeks once I have a MOT sorted on it
*Note* This is not a for sale post - the car is not for sale until i have a MOT on it and it will be sold via ebay
