Default Renault "POS" advice needed!

Hi guys

My wife has a 03 megane (pile of crap i know) she got in it today and it wouldn't start, after about 4 trys it finally started, but after that it kept cutting out in first and second gear. The only thing i can think of is plugs or leads, does anybody else have any other suggestions, before i take it to a garage and get raped just for them looking at it

Cheers

Does it keep turning over and does it have the keyless fob and push button?

If so it's the CPS (Crank Position Sensor) Reletively easy to fix if you a bit handy with a soldering iron and a 10mm ratchet as you will most likely have to cut into the loom to put the new CPS on, they changed throughout the range and the new ones are blue.

You might get away with cleaning the original one though, it's positioned over the gear box tucked under some coolant pipes and the cylinder head, you'll have to remove the battery cover and airbox to get to it though.

I can get you full prices and part numbers if needed. Fitting will cost a fortune from Renault. Beware though it cost me around Ł50+ for a piece of wire with a plug and the sensor. Then about an hour or so of my time fitting the part.

Coil packs are the most common problems on them, but recently we've been dealing with a couple with crank sensors, meganes and scenics. The one today would start, and idle for about thirty seconds and cut out, start again, but rev it and it was fine.

Yeah, didn't consider coilpacks tbh.... However as above they are prone to failure, I had two go on me in one month However I managed to get some from Andrew Page for Ł13 each (Renault wanted Ł45 + Vat) and I've had 18 months trouble free.

That sounds quite familiar, what was the problem with that?

You might be getting a PM for the details then mate, rather pay Ł13 than Ł45

Dirty crank sensor, just take it out and have a look, if it looks dirty just clean it up and see if its any better, cheapest option first anyway. Think coilpacks normally bring the engine light on.

I'd say crankshaft position sensor mate. I go out to loads suffering from that. Give them a tap and normally they will start.
