Default RPM hunting up and down on 4x4....Alternator???

Had this the other day when i was sitting in traffic, car doesn't normally do this but I suspect it may have been an alternator type problem????
I had the stereo, wipers, fan, heated windows on all at the same time. I switched some off and it seemed to help a bit (after a short while). Forgot to check the voltage reading on the SCES monitor at the time though.
Suspect it could be the alternator as I've never replaced this and I think it's the original one from new.

probably iscv needs cleaning out as it should maintain the idle speed when the electrical system is loaded but sounds like it might be overshooting due to stickiness

was the engine changing revs or just showing on the rev counter?

if the engine was smooth (well as normal) and gauge all over place then most probably an alternator issue (common diode pack fail)

Thanks for the replies, no it was actually revving up and down, not just on the clocks. I'll check the ISCV, I don't think it's that but you never know.
