This has been doing my head in too. It takes 5 days for the disk to arrive through the post so why can't you tax it 5 days before? I'm going to have to go to the post office to tax it after the 1st

If you tax online or on the phone before the end of the month you can legally drive the car without displaying the disc until it arrives by post.

So to tax a Sorned car you can only do it online 2 days before the end of the month, but you can then drive for 5 days into the new month of tax without displaying.

From Dvla;

If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...le/DG_10034732

AND ALSO

When to apply

If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month.
If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.
If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance.

I dont get the need for the only 2 days for SORN yet 15 for other cars???

Another scam by DVLA to get more money out of us by making taxing a car after SORN as inconvienient as possible?? ie the hope that we will all tax cars all year even if off the road??

And if the DVLA say the system cant do it with SORN vehicles then that is bollocks as i taxed my sorn car last monday (22nd) to begin on the 1st april and the barcode on V5 scanned fine and the post office woman didnt even mention anything.

Its not making it harder, its simply going on a full calender month to include the date on which you are taxing it.

You cant expect it to start in april if you tax it in march and its not currently got tax to cover march.

Taxed mine yesterday and it started on the 1st of march, as I wanted to use it this weekend.

yes but you wanted it to start on this weekend eg 28th. I want tax to start 1st april. Sure they have decided you can only buy a whole month worth of tax, fair enough.

Thats in effect saying that for sorn vehicles its not possible to buy tax in advance as long as previously taxed cars.

it IS still an offence to display a tax disc in a currently taxed vehicle that doesnt "start" until 1st april on say 28th march. The tax disc the person has renewed doesnt start till 1st april. why should that be any different on a sorn vehicle????

A currently taxed car driver buys his disc on 15th, but its still not valid until the 1st so why cant a a SORN car do the same???

Its not like youd get away with claiming your car is taxed before 1st april.

Because in that example, the car has tax for the period before the disk starts.

So you dont get in a situation where a car looks taxed but isnt.

oh and if DVLA want to use the unlicensed vehicles on road excuse for the 2 days rather than on 15th then blatently thats bollocks too because you could put the tax disc on your SORN car 2 days before its valid and its still EXACTY the same offence as if you did it on the 15th of the month before its valid

Its just the DVLA making excuses.

If you tax it 2 days before online, you dont have the disk until its valid anyway

all car tax databases will show it as unlicensed it will flag on ANPR and all vehicle checks which is how the vast majority of things are done these days.

They are trying to cover the small eventuality that an observant parking warden or nosey neighbour is looking All displaying a tax disc does in this country is potentially saves a policeman 20 secs doing a vehicle check. In fact its the same with all your docs, V5, MoT, Insurance etc.

Oh and chip im not having a go at you but picking holes in DVLA. The same criminal offence is committed keeping a SORN car on the road (with next months tax disc displayed) wether its from 15th of month before or 2 days before end of month. Sure in theory the magistrate might be able to vary the fine for longer periods untaxed but that doesnt change the legal specification of the offence comitted.

If DVLA are doing it to stop us "untrustworthy" Sorn'd cars going on road early then theyd make it so a SORN car can only be licensed ON and NOT before the 1st of the month for tax starting on that day.

I got done once for driving without TAX as I went to Southend on Saturday night (Finished repairing the car @ 7-8pm that day). Went to the Post Office Monday and got TAX starting the 1st of that month (So started 7 days before I went to Southend according to the ticket) as Ive always been told by the Police its back-dated if brought mid month.

Got a letter through from DVLA 2 weeks later saying I was driving without TAX. I stated my TAX disk is valid from 1st of that month, so I am covered for that night. He said it doesn't work like that, so I asked for a refund for the days I was not covered. They wouldn't give me a refund and I never heard anything of the £250 they wanted

DVLA will try fucking you over in anyway, so don't take a gamble when it comes to TAX.

so true

Theres some absolute shocker storys of people changing addresses and being sent back a provisional license or loosing categories with no trace on the system and DVLA being right cunts basically making them retake all thier tests. DVLA have even tried to reject photocopys of the old license from employers etc being used as proof of entitlement when DVLA have screwed up. oh and test centres only have to keep records for 2 years now as well!!!

Ive had several V5's go missing in post, plus in the 9 months ive lived here, 3 letters with no postage/not enough postage from DVLA

I got one up on the DVLA this week though I got my form to reapply for my license now im medically fit to drive and I was able to get my photo updated for free

Yes, and you can legally drive it from the 1st without displaying a disc (but only for 5 working days) so if the disc gets lost in the post you'll have to take it off the road while you wait for a duplicate. Or nor park it on the street where it could be seen without a disc.
ANPR will show it as taxed.

you've got no days grace as they will take it off of you if they catch you so as to make it look like they are catching criminals

READ my post no. 12 in this thread and follow the link to DVLA
You get 5 working days grace not displaying if you apply online or on phone before the tax or Sorn runs out.

Why the fook should tax start from the 1st of the month anyway?
Surely in this day and age of modern technology you would think you would be able to buy tax on any day of the month and let it run for either 6 months or a year from that date

Insurance runs from date you purchased till 1 yr later as does MOT ...why not tax?

It would be harder to spot out of date discs on parked cars if the expiry date was any day in the month instead of the last day of the month.

Of course non of this would be a problem if it was included in the price of fuel.

an alternative is the issue the disc just as now but to deduct the number of days of the month worth that you have missed if your buying it halfway through the month so perhaps youre getting 11.5 months of tax. it wouldnt make any difference to the post office when issuing theyed just need to do a simple deduction from the 12 month price.
