I've got a hissing sound I can't currently diagnose, on my 92 Escort 1.8 Zetec. It was actually a sheared bolt on the front left corner, near the power steering belt, not the headgasket, but changed it anyway (and belt, water pump etc
). All back together, start it up, fires up, but idle is erratic. Up to half temp on the gauge. Not over heating. But also no heat through air vents.
And a loud hissing sound that seems to be coming from under the coil pack area. I've wiggled all the other hoses about and don't get a change in pitch. My first though was maybe head not seated properly, or warped or something, but it's not spitting any water out. Any ideas?

crankcase breather hose not put back on or split, runs across top of gearbox where it meets engine,it metal ,should have black rubber hose attached, under coil, sounds like you also have air lock, run engine with cap off, till fan comes on,did you have heater in car set to hot and blower on,hope that sorts it

Isn't there a T-piece under the coilpack that always breaks?
As for the cold heaters, probably an airlock in the matrix, with the engine running (and hot) put the heaters to hot and give all the hoses (including the 2 matrix feed/return on the back of the block) a good pump with your hand, and that should get any air lock shifted!

Cheers guys.... did occur to me last night later on. Don't remember seeing a clip of any kind for the breather hose, so will have coil pack off later on and have a look.

Sorted!!!! Little 3" elbow piece from bottom of inlet manifold, wasn't connected to the metal breather pipe.
Running well now, although under probation for a week or two.
Quite chuffed as this was my first h/g replacement, that wasn't a pinto. Little more confident on the 16 valvers now.
