They are indeed a dual mass flywheel - unfortunately it is common to need to replace at the same time as a clutch.
I've got a second hand clutch and flywheel i took out of a donor engine/box for my project.
PM me if its of interest

[quote=Glenny Boy;4019749]Well thats put me off buying a ST170
Just buy one that's had it done - i got to 50,000 on mine and then one traffic light grand prix saw the end of it
Still managed another few thousand easy miles on it before i fixed it
You can go to solid flywheels but they'll be nasty to drive at low speed/pullaway etc. - the whole point of the dual mass is to refine driveability and smooth gearchange engagement

When i had my ST170 from new the first week i had it the clutch started to clip and ford changed the flywheel and clutch.
With the dual mass flywheel tho i was never be able to launch it hard or it would just slip or if you changed gear really quickly high up the revs it seemed to jam in until you let off the revs even with the new one.
Anyone else experience that?
Changing to the soliday flywheel does it have the same problems that someone was talking about a while back about it can snap the crank if you dont change the pulley on the other end IRRC on a mondeo that was tho.

My st170 has covered 94k now - should I start setting aside a clutch fund? :-(
No slipping evident at the mo - I've covered 75k of it's mileage so quite sure it's on the original clutch

My brother in law works for a lease company.... I was telling him about this problem today and he says that ford don't make enough money out of just doing a clutch so they tell you the flywheel is damaged. Apparently it goes blue from the heat from the clutch or sommat... I aint that technical.
Basically, he said its a load of bollocks that you need to change the flywheel every time... he just tells em to change the clutch itself when the cars go in for em and he's never had a problem. He has asked ford several times for pictures of what they class as a damaged flywheel.... he's never received any. His advice... just tell em to do the clutch.
