Default Cossie or Skyline?

Been thinking about getting another cossie, never really been into the jap crap, but always liked the skyline .

Cant decide what to do.

My brief is standard to no more than 350bhp

Not after all the bells and whistles and shiny bits, and refuse to spend big money with big name tuners etc. A decent paint finish, a bit of power and a car to be happy with are the main objectives.

Skyline will have to be white

Cossie black, moonstone or maybe white or magenta.

Any thoughts?

I can basically rebuild a cossie engine in my sleep now, so this is a big plus for me, and also the sapp pips it in the looks department. But i have the FORD ownership and immage that goes with them

THe skyline is basically what id also call an iconic car, Its a car that you dont see too often, well in my neck of the wwods anyway, so nice as its a bit different, and also the jap technology id like to experience, cos lets face it we all know what its like sitting in a 20+ year old ford. Yes i even hated my black raven leather in my es cos!

Dont want this thread to turn in to a "whats better" as both cars have their own merits and downfalls.

But would love to hear peoples views who have owned both or have been in both

on my 5th cossie and never owned a skyline but driven 2 and 1 rx7. skylines r33s anyway definately more refined for comfort and road driving but lacked the theatre of a cossie for me any way. skyline is the way forward though for sure when no decent cossies are left for sensible money.

the only skybus for me would be gtr for a start. but tbh the saff wins for me.i love them.a quality car that can take 5 in comfort and is a fairly quick car at 350bhp.

and lee, have you had your eyes closed round here? skylines are far more common than saffs.even rx7's and supras!! and all the skylines round here look battered now.too expensive for the chavs to run after buying. lol

im bias though as i fell in love with my saff and would have another tomorrow if i had too

Has to be the cossie, and I am into jap cars.

Skylines aren't actually that quick with circa 350bhp because they are so heavy, whereas a stage 3 cosworth is a quick road car.

I've been told that a 300bhp Impreza would be roughly the same performance wise as a 400bhp Syline.

I had a cossie owned it 3 weeks and it blew up, it cost me nearly Ł2000 to put it right, swapped it now for an RS200, miss my cossie but wish I had opted for skyline when I had the chance. If your interested I have a mate who is selling a white cossie running at 270bhp re-sprayed, new engine re-build.
If your interested let me know

Pete

Not had either but for me, I must've seen about 3 or 4 skylines in my time and seen quite a handful of cossies. Every time I see a Skyline, it just looks so special. I think it has a saff for looks easily but as for the rest, well, I can't comment on that. For head turning though, I'd easily be won over by an R33 than a Saff.

I would not have a gts skyline like in the picture so I would have to say cossie. It has to be a gtr skyline if any.

My last car was a r33 gtr 420 bhp. I loved the car but was a nightmare to work on compared to a cossie.

Yeh this is my biggest plus point on the cossie, there is litterally nothing i cant fix on the cossie, I know the cars almost inside out.

Where as the jap id be in at the deep end if anything went wrong.

Intresting, that. I mean the sapp is a bloody heavy car anyway so the skyline must be like an HGV in comparison

Really???

My biggest fear with a cossie is the love hate relationship.

My escort cossie was my dream car, but in some ways the day i sold it was also the happies day of my life

You swaped it for an RS200 thats quite a leap

Im not in the market right now, still restoring my rs1600i, but already on the lookout. as i cant see my self owning the 16i buy the end of the summer as i miss that turbo buzz

beef
Thats probably my second biggest hurdle.

Cossie wise anything from Ł2k up to Ł6k

Id be buying on bodywork, history/hpi, and over all condition.

Anything from a blown engine to a ready to play 350bhp

Skyline, well aint got a clue but no more the Ł6k really

I could easily spent 10k, but i dont want to. Had 13k in my escos, and i hated that thought, probably the main reason i sold it, not a lot of car for the money!!

Sorry the pics were just quick examples borrowed for pistonheads, as i know how you guys like pictures.

I know nothing about skylines, which is why this is a hard decision. I can just about tell you what a r32/r33/r34 look like. But as for the gt.gtr gts etc etc. Im not that up on them yet.

Im a bit more in the sticks than you matey, I dont think ive even seen 1 skyline this year yet!

Seen a jewel voilet escos only yesterday, two S1's, about five S2's, about ten sapp's and two rs16i's this year, and its only just spring.

And we live in the more affulent part of Essex not basvagas

Lee - if it's a more 'iconic' car you're after, and you want a genuinely 'involved' drive - have you looked at the R32 GTR?

I keep getting an itch for Skyline ownership and i'm sure that the day i scratch it will see me in an R32

i had both too m8 and cossie wins in every respect for me, dont get me wrong the skyline can take bucket loads of abuse, but i got bored of the skyline very quickly and inside the car its not a very nice place to be. just depends what you want from a car really

Iconic, well i suppose. but that would not be the main reason behind owning one of these. Its more about how the car make you feel if that makes sence.

Im now too bothered about outright power, infact im more than happy with the 120bhp in my landrover

Can some one post any pics. As said i have no idea of the various models, i just know ive seen a few in the past on the road and know i like the look of them.

But if you go jap were do you go for part.

Lee i worked on a few jap cars toyota/suzuki/mitsuBUSHi and i just find all 3 of them hard to work on.I seemed to find that to get at a sertain part on a car you had to take other bits off to get at them.

ive owned both and they both have pros and cons only skyline to have is a gtr and bits are fookin expensive mine was running 420bhp@1bar amazing performance, clutch went and to get one to handle that power is at least 1k (mine did) exedy twin plate, saffs are much more fun and affodable

A 350bhp GTR is not enough and 450 to 500 reliable bhp is easily and cheaply available. If the choice is 350bhp Cossy or 350bhp GTR I'd choose the Cossy otherwise a stg 2 500+bhp GTR everytime as they drive far better than any Cosworth.

I haven't owned both but one of my mates has.His sapp was all singing and dancing it was 550bhp,2wd and black (so the best) and he was into it for about Ł30,000 until he killed it.He then got the skyline thingy and tried to get me to buy one,erm nope ! Go and get a cheapish 3-350 bhp sapp 2wd and have it hanging lol,go on you know it makes sense .As sad as this sounds,it will be a sad day in my household if I ever have to get shot of my Sierra. Also before anybody spouts off about buying a cheap one saying you will pay double,I am pretty sure someone with your capabilities wont have a problem .Is the RS1600i all done now mate ?

having come from the jap stuff, i'd say if you're passionate about cars the cossie wins........

maybe thats because there more hands on (read into that what you will pmsl)

3dr are WAYYYYYYYYY better than escorts for out of the box feel so it wont be a let down like your escos was! especially once stage 3

lee, i have seen one saff so far this year and thats a customer of mine who is nearly 60 and live just down the road. but i have seen handfuls of skylines, gtr,gts r32 r33 r34. lol

i'd like to have an r32 gtr myself as the33 is far too common but i'd still opt for a stage 3 saff everyday over it. but then i do bleed blue. the jap cars lack character imo

Why ask on a Biased Forum why not on a Skyline Forum where the answer would be 100% opposite to what you have received on here, the question is rather pointless on a Ford Forum dont you think. Only you can answer this im afraid go try both & decide.

That R32 looks very nice though!!

But to buy one that mint would be mega ŁŁŁŁ

I agree with Cam, you want to be comparing 500bhp skybus's with 350bhp Cossies.

I say give a GTr a go, if you don't get on then sell on, otherwise you will always be wondering

Errrr good point but do you not see the irony in your suggestion.

posting on a skline forum is no less bias then a ford forum

Id just get the opposite answer and still be none the wiser!

Hes not an electrictian and the sapp is silver? had my eye on that car for years wondering if its looking for a home, as it sits parked up for 350 days of the year looks totally standard and unfetteled?

Ok i think i need to look at the specifics more, the model variations and features.

Sapp wise i think RWD is a preference

Possible cloth as i always think the black leather looks gash, probably the thing i hated most about my escort cossie!

Skyline, as neil says the 32 is the one, as its more iconic and less common then the 33,34.

Skylines sound awesome and very nice cars but i just think the fast and the furious spoilt these fantastic machines and you will be looked upon as a chav
