Buy an ST170??
Been thinking about buying an ST170 as they are nice and cheap now. Ill be driving it everyday, doing about 40 miles a day. Will it burn a hole in my pocket petrol wise as I hear they are quite thirsty? Or would I just be safer getting a diesel and getting the RS turbo I`ve always wanted??

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
My Mrs can run hers on fresh air and can regularly get 32ish+ to the gallon. I only have to look at it and its used 1/4 of a tank!!! When it was our only car i was putting £40ish in every 4 days and getting about 170 miles for that. Not exactly shit off a shovel fast either for such a thirsty motor. I hardly drive it now though but when i do it feels like a rocket after my 82hp jimny!
Lovely motor overall but should be quicker, understated and surprises a lot of people when they think its a normal focus.
They look like really good value at the minute, check out ffoc for all the common faults and other threads on economy.

I used to get 320-360 mile a tank out of my st170 on the motorway, and never less than 240 when booting it (probably 280 for your average drive cycle). Plus points are:
- Comfortable
- The noise when you boot it at 4k plus!
- Adjustability and balance of the chassis
- EL guages
- Lots of cheap little bits you can do to upgrade it - e.g. wiring loom and sensors to add CAT1 alarm; Focus SVT handbrake...
- Easy extra 10-15hp with exhaust cam pulley, bluefin, k&n and exhaust.
Negatives were:
Selling it....
Admitedly mine had 366mm + breambo 4pot brakes, an FRS body conversion and my old foci's full leather interior along with a few other bits...so I was a bit more attached to it than I would've been with standard st170. But the plus points above still stand.

I bought a 53(04) plate a few months ago with 28k on the clock and FSH. I paid £4800 for it, and it's totally mint apart from the wheels which are in need of a refurb due to bubling.

Living in this country you'd be as well going out and letting some bastard rob you. It's quite clear you're not meant to have any money to yourself.

mmm, now I`m swaying back towards the ST. Would prefer to get a ford. Just dont want my pocket getting hit with big fuel bills that`ll stop me from getting my RS.

I've had two of them - one standard, one supercharged.
Loved them both, cracking cars out the box - learn to drive it properly and they're a hoot on the back roads!
I used to average 280miles to a tank with mixed driving, but they're comfy enough for cruising long distances, but nimble enough to still be playful where required
