Anyone sense an overwhelming amount of bitterness about a bit of fun on telly? If it was serious they'd do a serious test. On the day the lardy shit handling car with a great engine lost to another car. Whoop de do

Its not all about bhp though in this instance, a totally standard Astra GTE on 19 year old tyres round a small track against an rst with uprated suspension and newer (better designed) tyres, is going to get beat because of the lack of space for its power to make up for what it loses through the bends.

Ive had both cars myself and had friends with turbo's and GTE's and been in many. I would happily have another GTE but Ill NEVER have another RST.

I don't sense any. looks like most people enjoyed seeing the race.

imho its good for two of the definitive hot hatches to be getting telly time again even in a non serious manner. still fun to see them driven properly.

not really bothered about who won etc as you'll never get a "fair" match no matter what car/race you do.

i just enjoyed seing two old school cars being hammered round the track by the lengend that is tiff. Cant believe i'm saying this but top gear could take a leaf out of their book, instead of doing stupid "specials" every week.

Bit harsh rob

Remember its tv entertainment, not factual. I love my RS's but a mate of mine had a 16v GTE and I love them too, only thing I'll say is that they didnt have enough airtime. Hope top gear get a shitload of RS's on the show when they do a new FRS test!

escort should of been a totally standard one to make it fair but i dont care what the out come, escort rs turbos will always be king in my books no matter how trashed, rusty or smoking.
i always enjoy seeing one weather it be on the telly or on the road.
just wish i owned one!
id rather own a focus rs too over a jap laptop on wheels

Of course, but to be fair to fifth gear, it cant be that easy to find a completely original low milage example of an RST, and even harder to find one the owner will let you rag around a race track.

was quite a good show, makes a change for 5th gear
great to see the S2 RS and GTE head to head as neither have really got much credit for how good they where in there day imo.

Indeed, 24 year old bushes, tyres, dampers, while nice for sitting in a museum, do nothing to show off what the car should be like on a track.

amazingly despite all that, and the fact that the RST was "modernised" to an extent, the difference in time was still well under a second, so just goes to show how much quicker the astra really was (well to anyone with enough of a brain to understand the implications of the difference between how the two cars were tested)

or 5th gear just hate vauxpiles like the rest of us
tis a shame the S2 rst wasn't a bit closer to standard, i'm sure even a standard one would out handle a gte so it would have been an even closer race.

Don't usually bother with Fifth Gear but did Sky+ it as I knew the Focus RS was going to be on. Have to say it was great seeing the RS turbo at the start, really added something and it looked great when going. Astra GTE just looked like a lump of shit don't care what it was back in the day.

Focus RS looked and sounded awesome but shame the review didn't seem that long or in depth but hopefully the real car show in the UK will do a longer review and let the Stig have it for a lap. 160+ mph hatch, nice

I'm another who disagrees with Plato's view on the Green/Blue, reckon it looks ace in green but best in white so far. Problem with green if you buy one planning to keep it for a while is it could be like a tattoo, you'll seriously regret it later on having to live with a car that 'loud'. Time will tell when we see them about. All web articles, reviews and TV that I've seen so far seem positive about the car.

As much as I'd love to agree, all things being equal the Astra would have creamed the RST!

Modifiy both cars and it's a different story, but as standard the Astra was faster and handled way better.

About 10 yrs ago I had a S2 RST with Bayjoo chip -31 actuator, running 14 psi set up by Harvey Gibbs and a mate had a Astra GTE 16v with a GrpA chip running about 160ish bhp, on the road there was very little in it between the two cars.

Best trick with the Astra was to flick the dash into kmh down a narrow road, passengers who didn't realise thought they were going quicker than possible..lol!

Was good to see the old cars on TV , pity it was'nt at a proper track like Combe which they use on 5th gear sometimes, the track they use at Milbrook seems a bit mickey mouse.

New Focus RS in white for me please!

I loved my old G-reg 16 valver - out of the hot hatches I had ( 309Gti, Golf Gti, Saxo VTS ) it was the most fun although the 309 and Saxo VTS were sweeter steering.

Put the optional German size on mine though - 195/55x15s. Used GY GSD2 and set up the geo as recommended by one of the lads at Ray Mallock Engineering ( he'd worked at Vauxhall and knew the GTE 16v inside out ).
Really went well.
I'd like to try an S2 RS Turbo now.

Thought it was a good episode.

Enjoyed the Focus RS test ....but prefer it in white to snot green

Personally I would be far more interested in seeing a ring time, or a combe time.
