Default de-EGRing a 1800 zetec escort

a friend has just put another engine in his escort, '96 zetec 1800, old engine had EGR, new one didn't, fitted later engine with out the EGR, it now idles at 1200 rpm untill you depress the cluth for about 5 seconds, then the idle drops to 950 (about 950)
if the throttle is touched it idles at 1200 rpm again....

if i get time i will look at it tomorrow, but does anyone have any ideas?

thanks in advance

Did you keep any exhaust gas pressure differential sensor connected if it had one, as they can go spasy if you don't.
