Whats the view/experiences of 1996 XJR SuperCharged Jag??Now With Pic :)
I have been offered a 1996 XJR SuperCharged Jag, in mint condition with 6 months tax and a years MOT.
Its my dads friend and as his wife uses it to go to the shops and drop the kids off it isnt the car for that job at all. So he said i can buy it off him if i fancied it.
Has anyone had one or what is the general consensus on them?
I know everyone says they are an old mans car lol but i really like them

I really like them personally.
NOT a car you can chuck about like a clio obviously, but still handle ok, and plenty quick enough in a straight line
15mpg when you arent driving hard though is a bit painful if you do many miles.
Gearboxes go wrong relatively often and are about 8-10K to get fixed at the dealer (ie twice what the car is going to cost you i expect!)

I know what you mean Chip they are big old things..but in a straight line is quite impressive for a big boat lol...i only do 20 miles a day so fuel aint a problem..
The rear diff has recently been rebuilt which is good.. as my old mans one is whining at the moment and not cheap to fix too.
and chip its alot less than that price you guess too.

I know a guy who does the gearboxes on these. He's getting quite the name for doing it as the local Jag dealers use him for their cars now
Pretty cool cars, get it bought and tweak it

The 4.0 ones suffered from nikasil issues..... hence why they're a LOT cheaper than the revised 4.2 versions.... if you dont buy one that was repaired/upgraded or a 4.2 then really its money down the toilet.

Not sure mate never worked on one, maybe a smaller S/C pulley... or NOS
If the box goes I doubt its economical to repair, my mate is generally half the price of the dealer. Get it bought if its Ł1k mate

Wouldn't have a V8.
How come it's running an extra 100bhp then?
For a grand silly not too, cheap enough to through away when the diff/box/something else scraps it.

I had one of these for about 18 months when I was 21, I wasn't bothered about the old man image! It was black and I had 19" XKR wheels on it. The straight 6 is the better version to have, the later V8's had engine reliability issues, although they had 370bhp over the straight 6's 320 bhp. Expect 14mpg for easy town driving, brisk town driving will bring that down to 9-11 mpg.
They are limited to 155 but to be honest are only just capable of that anyway. Expect 2-3 mpg if you want to do that, I did half a tank of petrol in a 25 mile journey!
They are quick, and an absolute pleasure to drive but with that comes some hefty bills. I had 255 35 19 P Zeros on the back, they lasted 5000 miles, even with traction control, although the traction control is very primitive. Things will go wrong with it, mine had 50k and a FJagSH but still had alot of faults come up. The 60k service bill was nearly a grand and then Jag reckoned it needed another 1500 spent on it. That's when I got shot of it, but at the time they were still quite new and worth going for a Jag history. I'm sure there are plenty of s/h parts available to keep one on the road for alot less these days.
For a grand I'd snatch his arm off, I'd love another one and very nearly bought a manual (rare) one last year for 3k, but ended up buying a second MK1 Escort instead, purely for cheaper running costs.
If there's anything else you want to know, just ask.
FYI the wheels on that car aren't correct, they are from an early XK8.

My boss used to have one of these a year or two ago, quick in a straight line but show it a corner and it shat itself !! Handled like an old barge
Hard on rear suspension bushes and rotten brake pipes, his one had the top end rattle from the supercharger and had only done 40k, never got any worse in around 15k miles. Went through tyres like fuck and all.
