no, theres a chip in the key and a ring around the barrel and will only start if the ring detects the chip, so wont start without the key, i can easily nick an older car, but anything newer 94ish onwards

Evem with chips, etc they are no problem at all, not going to post how to do it, but some expensive cars can have the windows open for you with NO TOOLS at all, so makes it a lot easier!!

robj20,
The question wasn't can you still start a car with no ecu etc was it ?
You may be surprised it CAN be done, if you can get to it so easy and it was worth the effort mr thief can come along and do the same but put one there.
If somebody wants something bad enough, and they have the opportunity, they will take it, could lift it up onto a truck with hiab etc if need be.
My advice is just take normal protection seriously, where you park has a major bearing on theft, also people tend to be very habitual, and parking a RS500 on the same unlit street out of town, soon gets noticed.
Thieves do thier homework(most), a opportunist won't bother if alarm starts going off etc.
A simple hidden fuel cut switch is a good idea, for peanuts, decent alarm/immobiliser, make sure your install is as it should be, many aren't and any car false alarming will just have neighbours ignoring it when it is a real thief, as they think it's a false alarm again.
Get friendly with the local kids, they love cars, and if they see your car being tampered with are a lot more likely to tell you straight away.
The last thing anybody wants is a surprise so install the extra siren that some alarms will power, as it is seriously disorientating to a thief trying to think inside your car.
At the end of the day a pro thief won't bother with stuff like old fords, as it is not worth his risk of getting caught for such a low sum.
Prestige cars go out of the country a lot of the time, a lot are found with tracker help as well.
I know of people who have spent thousands on thier car, and no alarm at all, as "it was £300 I'm not paying that".
These card slot type immobiliers can be got around in less than 1 1/2 minutes, that was on my cossie when I got it!!
