i'm having a "discussion" with someone who think that using bigger discs with the same sized calipers will not give any noticeable improvement in stopping abilities due to "the extra weight of the bracketing needed to space the caliper and the extra weight of the bigger disc because that's what i think"

so i said he should report everyone selling big discs to trading standards

Bigger discs with same sized pad area won't make a great deal of 'noticable' difference on a road car.

Not in a way you would notice.

You could put them pads onto something the size of a dustbin lid but it wont stop you any quicker

Ask them why ALL cars DON'T just have 150mm discs. then.

Without doing a controlled experiment it's not possible to say definitely but same car, same calliper, same pad, bigger disc must give better braking due to the extra leverage.
Extra heat from the improved braking will be lost just as quickly with the larger disc surface area.

Focus ST and RS use the same Rear pad size and calliper as the standard Focus setup but with a larger diameter disc, so Ford must be guilty of fitting and selling something unnecessary.

the cossie cars use the same pads as found on every other sierra/granada but added 20mm to the disc size and vented them in the later 4wd versions too
