Default Pc Help (Memory)

On my desktop i have 2 gig of memory made up from 1 gig x pc6400 and 2 x 512 pc6400. someone told me this would more than likely slow the pc down as it's wasn't working in dual channel mode.

i thought i'd check it out at PC world, in the hope that i'd actually bump into someone who would know, but als no, the spotty cunnox said "oh i dunno mate"

Anyone enlighten me before i spend dough? Running Vista ultimate (QUAD Core)BTW

Your right, the dual channel mode of your motherboard will now be disabled and that means you are losing some memory bandwidth. How significant that will be to you depends on how much you hammer your bandwidth now, but it will be noticeable in the grand scheme of things and often affects overclocking performance as one of teh unmatched sticks could be throwing the lot out and you will never know, at least when its all matched you know your optimised.

As it happens, due to my upgrade to 1066mhz ram, I have 4gig of 800mhz ram, in 4 matched 1gig sticks for sale extremely cheap too.. (See here)

You'd have to be a real real geek to actually throw out your ram in favour of ones that match in my opinion as i said you wont notice the difference anyway.
But if northern plans on getting another 1 or 2 gigs then it might be worth buying from you stu if there matched, it will kill 2 birds with one stone

I know mate, i wasn't trying to get more off from him, honest

I really can't decide though, reviews are saying that even if i put 4 gig in, chances are only 3 - 3.5 will be recognised due to vista's 32 OS, that being the case, i may as well just buy 1 more gig of 6400, put that in and therefore have 3 gig?

That would then be 2 x 1 gig and 2 x 512 , would that then keep the dual channel?

Sorry for questions, but i am learning, albeit slowly!

I recently bought 2 x 2GB PC6400 sticks from www.7dayshop.com for Ł34.99 including postage. Its made by dane electric and while not suitable for high overclocking it is more than enough for normal usage.
