Default solid lifters. someone technical needed!

Hello people

For my 2wd Cosworth

can someone explain to me the benefits of solid lifters and especially how they are fitted (in simpleton terms!!) please

How are solid lifters adjustable? in all honesty i dont fully understand them
when the solid lifters has opened the valve to its max opening - is there no adjustment on them?

Thanks in advance
Terry

Advantage is that they wont collapse when you rev the tits off the engine and get the oil hot.

They are adjusted normally by shims, which you do at the time you fit them, to adjust them you remove them and reshim them.

Hydraulic tappets use oil pressure to maintain a "zero" clearance between the cam and the valve.

If you use sustained high revs or very high lift cams you can run in to problems with the hydraulic tappets sticking open.

Solid tappets bacially are shims and bucket tappets that replace your hydraulic tappets. The downside is you need to manualy adjust your tappets at fairly regular intervals (like 10k miles).

Having used cars before with shim tappets, I would say 30,000 miles would need to be checked, they have a large surface area, so don't go out of adjustment so quick as people think.
Escort/fiesta/modeo diesel soldi tappets fit straight in, and then the shims from peugeot/vw/audi/seat/fiat/volvo/ford and a few others fit straight in, NOTHING needs removing to fit the shims, if you are careful, as you can push the bucket down enough to create clearance to lever old one out of seat and new one in.
Just a bit of simple faffing around with a feeler gauge, then take all shims out to see what gaps you need/thickness of shims, you can do swappsies as they do not need to be new, as they wear perfectly evenly, so cutting down on the ones you need to by.#
The last escort 1.8D I did needed only two to buy, £3 each.
