I have now a fiesta mk6 1.4. It has a whirring noise audible between 2 and 4k. If I depress the clutch and hold the revs between these areas I can hear it, so I don't think its the gearbox or clutch. What do you think it could be? I hope it's something like the alternator so I can change it relatively easily.

 

they are quite bad for alternator bearings
but without hearing it its impossible to tell realy

 

mine makes allsorts of noises - 90 odd % of them apparently a characteristic of the car!
