Default New Car Dilemma

Right Bro in law has £5k to spend on an automatic car. It has to be of comparable size to his old vectra and give 60k of trouble free inexpensive motoring ( fingers crossed )

I've narrowed it down with him to

a 56/57 plate Focus 1.6 Ghia with 30k Miles apprx ( got 4 to see on Sat )
a 54/56 plate mondeo 2.0 ghia apprx 30k miles

apprx 01/02 plate bmw 318 with 55k miles

(he wont have another vauxhall so that rules out Astra/Vectra)

What do you guys think would give the cheapes most reliable service over the next 4-5 years?

I have my idea but would be interested in yours.

Im pretty sure thats what id go for with reliability and hard wearingness in mind.

Dont forget its the company car of choice and they regulary get a beating...

This would be a mk3 mondy not the newer one...........I have one myself but am undecided on it so far, ace car but its eaten two sets of brake disks and an aircon compressor has failed in 12 months so not amazing but not horrendous.

Do the petrols have the same stupid dm flywheel as my diesel?

I'd personally go for the BMW everytime, they go for silly miles and are very strong. Servicing costs are just as reasonable at independants too.

How do BMW get things like bushes and clutches etc to last 100k plus miles when every other make of car doesnt last as long?

the automatic wont have the DMF though being an auto...itll have a converter. so should be no hassle from there.

thought about a honda accord? an early new shape one, not sure if you could get one for that money but hondas are so damn reliable its unreal. its what i want to get when i change from my mk3 mondeo.

My next door neighbour asked the exact same thing yesterday. He has got a ultima auto what hes had for about 9yrs and was asking me about an auto focus ghia 08 plate.I pointed him towards a mondy because of the size and he should get a good spec one ie leather etc.He was then harping on about the tax so i came in.
