Depends what you plan to use it for pal.
Both exceptional cars, but quite different beasts indeed.

Sound cheap that mate....if you can afford it

I'd put that on top on what I'd pay for an M3 and get something like an FQ-360 Evo 9.

what do you indend to use the car for.

as stu says they are different cars that do different things even tho theyre similar performance wise in a stright line. if you want a track car theres no point in an M5 and if you want a family car theres no point in an M3 etc.

AS much as I like turbo'd e46's it doesn't really strike me as a 1000bhp car.

The new M3 is fantastic on track and that weighs more than both the old and new M5.

I would go for an M3 myself, based on my situation I wouldn't need the extra space of the M5. I'd love either, saw a new M3 when I was at the ring, looked like it was going very well!

+1 for the M5 - Infact, ANY E39 with the "sport or M-pack" suspension/steering upgrades - they are extremely capable cars and the chassis is simply amazing.

I have the M5's little brother - the 540i Sport and the only thing that it is lacking is an LSD - BUT that can be sorted with a Quaife ATB unit for Ł600 + fitting

Graceland, you didn't get an M5 in the end and got a 540i M instead?

I'd have a new M3 personally. Don't really like the E46 much anymore unless it was a CSL. E39 M5 for me in blue (can't remember the name but the one bud-weis has an the other concourse one on here sorry I forgot your name) with black leather and aluminium trim (don't like all that wood effect...old man )

Pani - That is correct, after much deliberation in weighing up the pros and cons and the costs involved, the 540i Sport was a better choice for me personally. BUT having driven both the M5 and the 540i Sport side by side, they are equally as good cars with the M5 having only a couple of subtle differences that make it a better car - fewer turns lock to lock on the steering, 100bhp more, LSD in the M5 and slightly different seats and a bigger bill when insuring an M5 (1k more in my case )

100bhp more
LSD in the M5
slightly different seats
Plus a few other bits:
Lower Ride height
unique springs
unique dampers
bigger anti roll bars
Polyurethane auxiliary springs in place of rubber units
Steel balljoints in place of rubber rear suspension bushings
Mahoosive 2 piece floatings brakes

Nice Dash Clocks with sexy M. LOL
Oil Temp gauge in dash instead of econometer

Thats about it though really, nothing you couldnt change yourself quite easily. Well, bar the engine i guess. Interestingly, I believe there are only 2595 RHD M5's.

I now know why you got a silver one too - you don't have to wash it every 5 seconds to keep it looking clean

M5 M5 M5 M5 M5 M5

my friend has had a few of these, sometimes 2 at the same time! hes obsessed with them!

took them out myself a few times! once took an estoril blue with chamagne ext leather wide screen sat nav propa loaded big gun! the looks you get from the ladies is kool but have to say was getting mixed looks from people as im in my early 20's and those who dont understand a petrol head cant understand why im loving "an old mans car"

if i could afford one id have one, dont care that im 23, they look like sex

also the M5 on chat sounds like a war! he had one with a exhaust pipe! sounded like thunder

you can, but if youre looking for a pure track car then the M3 is the obvious choice, it's what it's designed for.
