thanks for all your input and advice, was going to buy a 50 inch Panasonic as recommended by stu.But ended up buying the samsung ps50a556s purely because of the price,it was on offer pre sales at 1k,boxing day sales at the big retailers saw it drop to 699 had to be bought.
It is replacing a Panasonic 42 inch plasma from the 480p era when these were the top of the range tv's at 3k lol how things have changed.
samsung seems to perform fine for it's price and play blue ray via a ps3 very well
pre divorce I would have bought the most expensive now the kids and i have to shop at Aldi
just read on the av forum a guy bought one from comet at 1k before the sales, saw it in the sales at 699 so took it back to comet for a refund and then nipped into curry's and bought one at 699 ,top man

The samsungs are very cheap but im afraid its not a patch on the panasonic picture quality.
Cant beat it for the price though...
at my age with my failing eye sight i wouldn't be able to tell any way
I remember stu having issues with dots on his screen on his new Panasonic turned out his glasses needed cleaning
we are getting our new 50' samsung delieverd today!!
ours was also 699 and its 1080p 100 hertz
(whatever that means)
apparently they are only 50 hz at 20k contrast
alot of the specs quoted are wrong
quite happy with mine due to the price doesn't look much bigger than my old 42 inch panasonic plasma as the panasonic had a thick frame and the speakers on the side
The samsung is .5 icnh shorter and only 3 inch wider overall but the screen is 8 inches bigger and 8 inches is good to have
just need to replace my betamax video player now roflol

Now for some geometry, since all 16:9 screens are going to have the same height to width ratio (ie 16 to 9). we can get the visible area by knowing only the diagonal. the 0.49 and 0.87 come from manipulating sin and cosin functions (you dont need to know but can check my math if you like) also these are rounded estimates
height of screen = h = 0.49*diagonal
width of screen = w = 0.87*diagonal
Visible screen area = A = h*w
42" screen A = 754 square inches
50" screen A = 1066 square inches
thus a 50" has 1.4 times more viewable area than a 42"
