Default 2wd Rear Calipers on an RST

Morning Guys,

I was fitting my re-conditioned 2wd calipers last night and I've had a few troubles bleeding them up.

I think I might of ended up damaging them

I didn't read the instructions first so I fitted the handbrake cable then adjusted that. When I came to bleed the calipers I struggled to get any fluid to come through

Once it did end up coming through fluid started leaking out of the top seal (under the handbrake pulley thing).

Anyone any ideas???

Not too sure about the seal but,if you take the caliper off the slider and sit it on the top off the disc( using the pads ) it will bleed a lot easier.

If your car still has the compensators on the rear brakes then make sure you jack the car up/put the axle stands under the suspension arms. If you jack the car up under the body and let the suspension hang down the compensators will stop the fluid flow to the rear brakes.

No the handbrake was off.....

According to the instructions you need to bleed the brakes before adjusting/fitting the handbrake cable (it has a self-adjuster thingy in it).

I did it the other way round (Adjusted handbrake then attempted to bleed). Am I likely to have fucked something up?

John, are you getting some one to depress the foot brake or have u got a bleeder that forces fluid from the master cylinder usually via air from tyre.

I used to use en 'Ezi Bleed' but personally don't think they are as good as the old fashioned way of one person pumping the pedal and one person operating the nipple so thats what I did.

p.s. Hows the engine going? Fitted yet?

Make sure the compensators arn't seized as this is a common fault on RST's, also take the caliper off to bleed it with the bleed nipple at the top (making sure you grip the piston to make sure it doen't pop out)

Guys....the brakes were bled about 3 months ago and fluid came through the hoses fine....last night I also took the solid copper line off before the flexi and pumped the pedal through no problems...therefore I think we can assume the load compensators are ok.

The pedal when bleeding the brakes is usually quite easy to push down to the bottom...but when trying to bleed the brakes last night the pedal was very hard....and fluid was only forced out during the last 0.5 inch of travel...when the pedal was released it didn't return to the top very well

I tried bleeding them in both positions (3 o' clock and 12 o' clock) no difference.

The main cause for concern is the pedal action and the calipers leaking from the handbrake thingy seal.

What I thinking is that because I adjusted the handbrake first I've done something in the caliper and when I've come to bleed the brakes I've forced the fluid in and done some damage to the seal?

How does the self-adjusting thingy work?

I'll take some piccys

Once the first one started leaking I just stopped as it didn't seam to be going very well.....the re-con was by Delphi. I might try bleeding the second side tomorrow and see what happens.

Are there any special methods for bleeding 2wd Saph rear calipers??

aye... take the handbrake off

Sorry John but if its leaking from under there then the seal sounds like its u/s. Obviously there should be NO leaks from anywhere so even if you get it to bleed up I dont think it will stay pressurised for long. Like you say a pic would help and maybe save a thousand words in these instances.

Good luck anyway.
