Register an imported vehicle

Register an imported vehicle
Hi there,
has anyone (in here) ever registered a foreign car in the UK?
I need to register my german Escort Mk4 Cabrio, as i´m still driving around with german registration and insurance.
I already have form V55/5 from DVLA for registration of an imported vehicle, and also a description how to fill it out.
But most of the data i have to take out from a CoC (Certificate of Conformity) which i don´t have!
Can anyone tell me where i can get one or what i can do instead?
Thanks in advance

you don't need the CoC as it's too old. i've imported 2 cars from germany and it is as easy as filling out the form. it's best to go to your local dvla office and do it there as they will be very helpful and go through it with you to make sure that everything needed is there. good luck

as said above, just go to your local dvla office, and fill out the forms,
if the car is over 10 years old, get it mot'd using the chassis number not the reg and then your away.
i have done 2 jap imports and it really is quite simple
you will also need all the relevant shipping documents including the uk taxes form

Also no more SVA`s then?
I tried to get MOT, but the guy in Kwickfit told me i have to register it first, as all my documents are in german!
What do you mean with all the relevant shipping documents including the uk taxes form??
I came with the car from Germany when i moved to UK... Do i need the ferry ticket then?
Sorry for all the stupid questions..

as said, first job is to get an MOT and they will use the VIN number. take that and your papers from germany (prefferably showing that you've de-registered it ) to the dvla office with some money and that's it. there is nothing to do with import tax etc as EU and no need for any shipping documents. you're worrying about it too much and being too german

But as said, they didn´t want to give me mot with only having papers in german...
But ok, if you're sure, that this is the way to go, i will try again... This was also my first thought, but there must have been somebody without any clue
Many thanks

I didn't have any official paperwork when I registered my Dutch Mk3 Escort.
Get it MOT'd on the VIN number, and then take that and proof of the date of manufacture to the DVLA and you're sorted!
Only cost me about Ł25 plus the cost of a tax disc too!

Ok, and i need to have a valid british insurance when i go to the DVLA office, right?

dpends very much on the person and the car. if it's a standard vehicle, you might find the big ones like direct line, tesco etc are cheaper than specialist brokers like flux.
sadly, you will have to spend hours online and on the 'phone to find out

The engine is standard, but not the bonnet, bumpers etc.
#19
by standard i mean everything as it came from the factory. all modifications have to be declared to the insurance company and some may affect the price of the premium.
what have you done to the bonnet, bumpers etc?

Well, i had a wee accident...
And then i took the chance for some modifications:
RS-Bonnet, bad look, and the efi bumper, also white mirrors by now and it's lowered 60/40.
The rest is pretty original..apart from the interior!

those are definately mods that need to be declared, although they may not increase your premium. but they could make it so that the big standard insurers will not be competitive. you'll just have to ring around i'm afraid.
personally, i would keep it on german plates and insurance as it makes it easier to park and drive past speed cameras

Of course i make regular trips, but as you said it´s too far away from scotland, i prefer flying...
Anyway, i want the british registration. You just have a lot more possibilities...

I just try to get a quote online...
Not sure about some points:
Value Ł - Does that mean how much i paid for the car or what i think it is worth?
Number of Claims/Accidents in last 5 years - shall i mention my german claims, or better start completely new?
hird
What is the difference between comprehensive, third party fire and theft and laid up cover?
I guess comprehensive is the best and most expensive one... And third party fire and theft only covers the damage of the "opponents car" in case of an accident? like the german "Teilkasko"
Security fitted - does that mean an alarm, or is a central lock also security?
Use - social domestic & pleasure inc. commuting... ahm i drive to work with it every day, does that count as commuting?
Sorry for all the stupid questions!

1. Value of what you think the car is worth
2. i would always declare any previous claims or accidents, even in Germany. But it will be cheaper to say no accidents, but if you have to claim and they find out about previous accidents and you didnt declare - then they will not pay
3. comprehensive will cover your car for repairs and the person you hit. Third party fire and theft will protect your car againt fire and theft only and the person you hit
4. security is normally anything which os not factory fitted, e.g. clifford alarm and immobilizer
5. social domestic & pleasure inc. commuting means to and from work and to drive for pleasure (this is the most common cover)

Finding an insurance, espacially for an imported car without UK registration in a pain in the arse!
Best offer yet, to insure it on the VIN is 400+ a month! To hell with that..

No, not tried that yet, but i don`t have to need anyway:
All drivers must have held a full UK licence for at least 1 year...mine is german..:-(

So if they take the plates off in Germany. How can you drive the car back to the UK? (without trade plates) or can you just post the plates back once you've got home?

my pal will register it with his insurance and then i can search for an insurance

Good to hear you're getting the registration sorted, although the German plates do look sweet!
