Default ERST poor starting from cold-ish problems...

PLEASE SEE FUTHER DOWN FOR UPDATE - 20/11/04

Right, been having an issue starting car in the morning since my starter motor died (coincedence or what eh?!)

Anyway, turns over fine so battery is in A1 ok condition
After about 10-15 secs of turning over, my defi's decide they like to play 'let's keep resetting ourselves' time and time again, also defi controller is flashing on and off in conjunction with actual gauges

I have changed my distributor cap and rotor arm with Genuine Ford Bosch items with no change at all

I have checked the spark plugs (NGK9's) and they have a gap of 0.60

Had fueling checked today at my ever so friendly local garage and it's at 3.4% - so all is fine there

Cold Start injector has ALWAYS been dis-connected on my RST and my previous one too and the cold start metering head feed is used for my 5th Injector (which does work fine)

I have only left the car not run for about 2 1/2 hours and was definately warmed up good and proper before hand - guess what, it did the same but didn;t take as long to start

Am going to get some std BCR8ES spark plugs to try tomorrow as they are cheap and cheerful and see if that makes any differnce to the starting on Saturday morning

All connections and sensors are ok by looks of things

Please throw any more suggestions my way, I'd really appriciate it peeps

Starts slightly better on Sunday I must admit - 'cos I rarely take car out on that day PMSL!!

Nah serious, anything else I can try or look at before I change plugs??

What happens if no difference with std plugs though, think I'll just sell the coont!

If that doesn't work, disconnect the union off the fuel filter and put a lit match to it, then run really fast.

Just because it turns over doesnt mean the battery is fine maybe its using all the power to turn over but cant quite supply enough for the coil and spark ?

I have just replace my battery and it has made world of difference to the start up and inital 20 sec running period

Other than that get APT to look at it while its there

Well its the quickest thing to test, run another car and jump leads onto yours and then start it up the alternator and battery power will be a boost to your battery and could help to something or nothing, but nothing lost in trying

Righto

Using another car for battery did not work
Changed spark plugs for std BCR8ES with no change also

Tries to start, fires up, misfires very badly and then dies straight away, try to restart and does same but hesitates to run properly, hold throttle and still misfires but shit loads of white steam exiting the exhaust - was only 2 degree when I did all this, eventually runs ok when foot on throttle held at 4k for about 1 minute

I knew I had an oil leak so had a rocker cover gasket ready to fit today, turns out it was the blanking plate at the back right hand side of the head that was missing the nut so leaked LOL, fixed that and replaced gasket - this took me a whole one and a hlaf hours as I lost that same nut and couldn't find it ROFL

Anyway, guess what - it wouldn't start, not as bad but still being a complete pain in the arse!

Checked ALL fuses in the fuse box, all are ok and present and rated what fuse box cover says

What can I do??

Please help...

Is your thermo switch ok. I had the exact same issue. Its either the brown or yellow connector of your loom that goes to the sensors under Inlet manifold.

James also has your loom still got the colour coded connectors on it. May be worth double checking right connector goes to right block.
I notice u say your starter was fooked! Did you have it replaced?
In that case did you reconnect the earth which is secured by started motor bolts?

I didn't change the starter, garage did it as I snapped solonoid in two and didn't have a trolley jack or axle stands to get to the 3 reataining nuts that hold it in place

Have just looked, all connection appear to be where they should be

Problems only started when gargae gave me a battery tester to use to see if battery was caput or starter was definately dead

It has 2 prongs with what I can only describe as a cooker element inside a box which heats up - resistance??

Was a pain to start since then and ONLY from then, was fine before

Silly things, they have not done any thing like knocked off a vacuum hose or similar when your battery was tested.

Well, ordered a new Thermo Time switch and put it in car, made absolutely no difference at all
Spent about 2 hours at APT this afternoon testing various bits 'n' bobs but nothing shew that it was faulty on the equipment Gary had

In fact it indicated everything was exactly how it should be, 1 year after it was set-up and still on KE-Jet management

Anyway, going to test a different Fuel ECU and water temperature sensor

See if thta helps, if not, well I'm stumped to be honest

Will spend a night with Gary LOL and see what it does when stone cold...

A few ideas...

1 - Loss of rest pressure
2 - Improperly adjusted airflow sensor
3 - Sticking control plunger
4 - Leaking injectors
5 - Incorrect control pressure

Only injector that can leak is cold start one and that's not being used
Metering head plunger has been cleaned and is not sticking
Everything is A1 ok when warm - infact looks to be perfect

What's this airflow sensor?

BTW, speak in English terms to me
i.e what exactly you mean by some of your ideas
