Default how much to install a house rad??

i want a rad in the garage, i have a rad, where i want it theres a rad the other side of the wall about a metre along, was thinking it could be linked off that.
i can fit the rad to the wall, get a hole in the wall etc.. but wanted to know a rough price on what i should expect to pay a plumber to link it up???

No more than £100 really if you've done most of the work yourself, just a simple drain down tee off and refill really.

mate if you work in a garage as a mechanic you will be able to do most simple plumbing work yourself.

go buy a book and save £100 quid!

Euan, i could do it but i have no plumbing tools & would rather have it checked over by a Pro anyway, by the time i but a few tools, pipe etc i might as well get someone round if it cheap enough. do most other things myself as i'm tight

You can't link radiators m8, well you can but it won't get as hot as it should. You need to run the pipes for the new radiator back to the distribution manifolds.

u can tee in to the other rad as long as you get pipe size correct and dont install a too bigger rad, if its a combi system you have u can easily balance the system to allow for the extra rad, if its a tank fed heating system u have same applys but not good to have to many rads on the system, and please get a plumber to do it lol seen to many DIY go wrong

Do these prices include all the piping in the walls? I have one in my lounge that needs moving from one side of the corner to the other. The pipes come out of the plaster just above the skirting board -will it cost extra to have them sunk into the walls?

I'm sure the plumber will sink them for you......its just you'll have to pay the plasterer to cover it all up again!

It certainly would cost extra. Chasing walls out is a horrible messy job, and no plumber/installer would do that free of charge. I would'nt and i dont know any of my mates who would either.

To clear up a few misconseptions on here, as long as the boiler is big enough, (KW's)then you can fit another rad directly off the existing, flow and return. Dont cross them unless you have 2 way TRV's fitted. Make sure on one rad at least, that you have 2 lockshields, usually the bathroom is the place. If you have an old conventional system, you may, have to back fill as the system will have been designed with an exact amount of rads, plus they are usually sludged up. If its a combi the filling is easy, you might have to throttle the valves down to balance the system if the new rad is not getting hot, which means your boiler cant cope or your system is full of sludge.

24KW is good for about 6 rads

28KW 7 rads upto about 9 max

30KW 9 rads

upto 35KW will handle 10 rads

All again though is dependant on the size of the house, length of pipe runs ans size etc...

A 28KW will do a great job in a 3 bed semi, but not in a big detached. You get the drift. You would'nt expect a 1.3 valencia enginge to easily pull a 7.5 tonne truck would you.

This could turn out expensive as you might end up putting a frost stat in your garage to turn the boiler on incase the temp drops below freezing . The rad will freeze up if its below 0 degrees in the garage and a frost stat bypasses all timer controlled circuits and turns the boiler on iff the temp drops below 5 degrees c . Im doing this in my garage too just to be on the safe side . Best thing is its free for me as im a sparky and have pretty good plumbing knowledge and fitted central heating systems before except the gas side of things . Its easy to fit a frost stat so pm me if you need any advice .
