question about the pins that hold pads in on big brakes

Default question about the pins that hold pads in on big brakes

Sorry aother Q

The pins that go right through the calipers that hold the pads in place has a springs that goes round it also the whole length of the pin. when the pads are on does this spring go between the 2 pads and is it neccersary to have these springs as mine have broke a bit lol

but were does the springs go when the pads are in between the 2 pads or what.
