I've recently got a samsung 50" plasma, and its excellent, however the screen is quite prone to screen burn, so avoid prolonged watching of channels with an opaque logo in the corner (see through ones are ok)

I had a 37" LG, and although it had better features than the samsung, it broke three times in 4 months

The thing i miss that the LG has that the samsung doesnt is that the LG automatically adjusted the screen picture so it fills all the screen, all the time. Depending what you are watching you get black lines along the top and bottom of the screen with the samsung.

I noticed the definition on normal TV is much better on the plasma. There's no blocky pixellating thing when objects are moving quickly which makes watching late nigh porn rubbish.

On the plasma the blacks are richer and it's easier to make out shapes on dark films/shows. I tested Iron Man on Blu ray on his the other day and in the cave, you can actually see the baddies ALOT more clearly.

In fact... wanna buy an LCD Samsung?

Edited to add, the downside of his plasma is it cost over Ł2k iirc.

Dunno about that Stu , there's some pretty knowledgable folks on here that can explain in laymans terms whats what, wthout the post being overloaded with jargon.

MAD EVO 4
It would help to know the sort of budget you have in mind?
Also the distance the unit will be viewed at? This will help ensure reccomendations made are suitable and ensure an optimal viewing experience.

Must admit I do like the idea of 100hz and LCD, certainly a nice set especialy if you view it on the likes of John Lewis's website(nicer pics of it on there)
The new 200hz KDL40Z4500U is just outside your budget but would be worth viewing too imho.

Cool

if you came into my shop, our guys would first of all ask "do you watch football/F1/rugby/tennis?" basically anything fast-moving?

if so, plasma, everytime!!!

the ONLY reason, as far as i'm concerned to go LCD is size. smallest plasma AFAIK is 37"

and panasonic is a good bet, unless you can afford pioneer

screen burn could be an issue if you play lots of games, though.

some good reasons to buy plasma...

does a good black (all other colours look better against a good black)
better high speed motion (hence football question above)
if a pixel (or two) drops out, it just goes black, not bright white or red or green (very distracting, and manufacturers DO NOT consider one or two dropped pixels a fault)

however, LCD doesn't suffer screen burn, and is generally considered to last longer (although we constantly exchange both types inside the first year warranty, neither is as reliable, or fixable, as CRT tvs)

my area manager would kill me for saying so, but BRING BACK TOSHIBA PICTURE FRAME CRTs!!! (think that lucky bugger Thrush on here has one)

i have the same problem with mine, but i find that if you let the screen change by just chaning the channel for a few minutes before oyu turn it off it goes away

otherwise it tends to stay on teh screen even when you turn it back on again the enxt day

subtitles really fuck it up

I would go for a 1080p plasma that supports 24fps otherwise your Blu Ray movies will judder. I feel that a TV with good colour reproduction is more important than 1080p as this is only used for either HD-DVD or Blu Ray movies, and less than 5% of all PS3 games output in true 1080p so you wont see any benefit. 1080p is a marketing buzzword and Sony media hype, just because an item is 1080p does not mean it has good picture quality, all it means is it can display 1080 lines of pixels.

DVD's are 575p and will upscale to at least 1080i providing your DVD player uses an HDMI cable. Sky HD outputs natively in 1080i with no broadcasts likely to b in1080p for the forseable future. So to recap look for a TV with a high brightnes and contrast ratio and a TV that supports 1080p 24fps for your Blu Ray discs. Make sure that if you do go for a 1080p Tv that it displays a screen res of 1920x1080 as some Plasma's only accept a 1080p signal and downgrade it to 1080i.

Isn't there a warning somewhere within a PS3 (on a game or something) that states it shouldn't be played on a plasma due to the possibility of "burn-in"?

I'd go LCD, value for money is second to none.

I need a bigger tv.
I lose on COD4 far more than i should due to the small 15 inch tv i have

dont get the panasonic with Freesat, its a waste of money, it gives you bbc1 hd and itvhd for free but you will need a dish installed before you can use them.

Also if you have sky or virgin you will never need it because they already offer the channels.

get the PX80 in any size if you can because its great.

I've got a 1080p Samsung 50" Plasma and it's been faultless!

You can get a really nice Samsung 100hz one now for around Ł1200 (which is the bugdet Mad Evo has said he has)

Also you might wanna get a surround system aswell... With mine playing COD4 with the lads off here it's just awesome!

If its above 42" then a plasma without question.

Pioneer are the best by a country mile but are expensive for full 1080p sets.

Failing this as above you cant go wrong with a panasonic

I am a regular user on avforums.co.uk and am pretty knowledgable on this subject.
