Here you go, straight from the manual....

- Tighten cylinder head bolts progressively in sequence to 20Nm.
- Use a felt tip pen and mark position of radial mark on each bolt head.
- Tighten bolts in sequence shown, through 180 degrees.
- Tighten bolts in sequence shown a further 180 degrees and align marks.

- caution - if any bolt is over tightened, back off 90 degrees and re-align.

Tightening sequence:

9 - 5 - 1 - 3 - 7
10 - 6 - 2 - 4 - 8

I *think* the left side is the timing side of the engine

hope that helps

steve

doh already done that 2 clean the pistons up !
However ive checked the liners with a straight edge and they all line up so i think i got away with it!

Anyway my main question is were do u set the pistons 2 before you put the head on?? Do i set number 1 2 tdc then set the head up 2 tdc then put in on or is that wrong??

Thanks for the headbolt info!

You'll have leaks - dont risk it.

Pull the pistons out - liners out - and re seal them.

iirc its only hylomar.

Its a sealant - break the seal and water will pour in the oil when the cooling system pressurises.

never had it happen to me(ex rover mechanic)
but have heard a few horror stories about them being fooked after they've been turned over when the head was off
might be worth checking before you put the head back on
and the pistons all sit level half way up(or down) the bore
if you look at the crank pulley you'll see 2 dots
these sit 1 either side of the line on the block

I know i should of set it first before taking the head off but hindsight is a bitch isnt it! lol

You set the pistons to 90 btdc - there is a mark on the bottom pully that lines up between two ribs on the oil pump.

Head on.

Cams are set so the two marks on the pullys face into each other. A special tool makes it easy to hold the cams in position.

Then feed the belt up from the bottom pulley and then over the cams - then finally the tentions - what type have you got, manual or automatic?

no if your gonna turn it then put all 4 pistons so that they're level
this is a safe mark that rovers time to
that way the valves cant hit pistons when you turn them
dont matter about timing the cams untill its on cause they turn without any contact if the cranks timed properly
and next time try timing it up before you take the head off lol

so let me check i got this right! set the pistons so there in the middle then bolt the head on! then set the valve cams to there timing point then set the crank 2 its timing point!

I know mate as soon as i lifted the head of i realised i hadnt set the timing up! i could have kicked myself! lol
