Default root canal surgery!painful?

basically had to take the day off work due to INSANE pain in one of my back teeth (caused a migrane etc...couldnt walk properly let alone work!) and went to the dentist,he numbed my mouth (still numb 3 hrs later!) and gave me a temporary filling, and then told me i needed a root canal,so its booked for next tuesday.anyone had this done?should i be booking more than just one day off?have heard its pretty bad?
oh and big up the NHS!im not even registered with an nhs dentist, yet i called this morning at 8.45, was booked in for appointment at 12.20,was given treatment, and told what was needed and booked in for an appointment within a week!no problems for me yet again,i love the NHS!

Do you have an absess?

I had one on a front tooth. OMG pain was immense, but the root canal didn't hurt, infact I didn't even have any anestectic.

They drilled down the tooth then filed out whatever it was with 8 different files

Don't know why I didn't have the anesthetic or why it didn't hurt. Maybe it was the pain I had got used to as it was about 2 weeks I had to put up with it.

If I chomp on the tooth now I can still feel it, but not quite as much as the other teeth. Maybe the nerve has been effected!

I had to drive back from Malaga with my mate non-stop in the worst pain ever. Took 29 hours with no sleep

fairplay - not the sort of job you want to do with other things on your mind! shouldnt be too bad anyway - you wont be able to feel your face for the rest of the day lol

Had it on a front tooth, was fine mate. The drill and file can be a little droney, but no pain at all.

Put it this way, the pain your in will be FAR worse than anything a dentist will throw at you so it will be a plesent break from the pain getting the treatment.

Like a normal filling really , you'll be right as rain after.

Oh, meant to add, often an persistant abscess forms and so the nerve us removed, this is when it can be painful as the anastetic can't take effect properly so you feel more.

Ths is what happened to me, they they backed off and gave me antibiotics for a week to calm it down them had it done,

If yours is more that the tooth has broken and exposed the nerve, then this wont be a problem, if it does start to hurt during treatment, stick you hand up and get them to slap another injection in.

well I'm in the minority here......it hurts ! a fucking lot ! Had it done about a year ago and the dentist had to do it over 2 sittings. I recall a 27mm drill bit and then a 31mm ! then there were the metal pins he pushed down the drilled roots and then the hot liquid that went into the hole, to top it all off he then used what looked like tin snips to trim the metal rods down to size !

hurt like fuck and never want to have that again ! Went to the dentist for a checked up on Thursday and need 2 bloody fillings so booked in for the 4th

had it done twice - only painful bit is the injection. i needed 5 to properly numb a nerve once. then it's only painful if the nerve is not numb - and then it will be the worst pain that you will ever have experienced, especially if it's a top tooth as the nerve seems to lead directly to the brain!

afterwards eat ice cream and other soft, cold stuff and take ibuprofen and you won't feel a thing the next day

my sister had a bad experience when she has to have 17, yes 17 teeth out in one session. if she has treatment she gets some diasepan(sp) from the doctors to load up on before she goes in. Last time she had to be carried into the dentist chair she was proper out of it, it was funny.
