Default Calling all internet experts

Over the last few years we have had nothing but trouble with our internet connection, it rarely works perfectly if at all but recently its been on and off every couple of hours and very slow, today though its dial up speed

I've just checked my speed on speedtest.net and this is what I got :

http://www.speedtest.net/result/346228557.png

The internet is at its best when I'm not downloading anything, as soon as I do it will lose its connection and usually un plugging the router and restarting it sorts it for a short while.

Our connection was through Tesco but Pipex recently offered it to us for nothing so I thought it made more sense to change as even if its still bad its not actually costing us anything anymore. Typically its still the same as it always has been meaning atleast it wasn't a problem with Tesco.

We don't use the modem Tesco or Pipex supplied as we need a wireless connection in the house so we have a Belkin router which even when the pc's lose a connection still has the web light illuminated

Any help would be appreciated.

request a line check from BT and see what they say.. but state it drops voice connections, they will do nothing for data.

A number of circumstances can effect your broadband.

Assuming you are plugged into the main BT socket, i.e the one that the cable or BT telegraph pole connects to to enter the house. If not please connect your router to this point.

Make sure no other devices are using your telephone line. Sky box, fax machine, even unplug your home phone etc

Once you have done this please run the BT speed test link below and copy n paste the results.

are you sure the conncetion is dropping or it's not your router having a mare?

My mother inlaw has your problem bit AOL on a netgear wireless router.

Says the connection constantly drops, I used a network cable straight from the router to my laptop and it was on all last weekend, yet the wirelsss was dropping all the time.......so are you basing it on being wired or wireless?

I thought that this could be a issue so I moved the router to the main socket by the front door, sadly it didn't change anything but tbh the wiring at the front door looks like its been lashed together, not exactly original. Would BT sort that or would I need to speak to Pipex ? I'll unplug everything and run that test in a moment.

aye as mondeo man says do all testing first using a wired connection. Internal wiring will not be fixed by BT. To test if it is you internal wiring you can test from the engineers socket. At the master socket that you are now plugged into there should be two screws about halfway up the socket. Remove these screws and remove the face plate of the socket. Once you have done this there should be another socket to the left of the one you normally plug into. Plug your router into here via the splitter and run the BT speedtest. And report the results back against the results gained from using the normal socket.
Hope that makes sense

THe 100mps is likely to be the speed at which your router can transfer data to your PC/Laptop, not your sync speed or line speed.

What happens when you try to connect to the internet wired, page cannot be displayed or what?

When you pick up your telephone do you have any noise on your line?

In regards to your e-mail working and Internet explorer not working are you absolutely certain that it is connected, i.e. you can send and recieve as opposed to it just loading saved data in your e-mail.

Go back to basics as suggested above rip everything out, telephones, sky etc and use just router and laptop via wireless and see how you get on. Also check that your telephone cables inside your junction box are secure and the wires are not degraded in any way.

Internet page cannot be displayed

The only thing connected to the phone line is the router.

The BT test page comes up with a test error

I'm currently on my pc upstairs

has every thing plugged into a phone socket got a filter?

as a test remove everything bar the router (assuming this has a filter)

and then run the test

when you plug direct into the router what ip details does it give you?
