my dogs back legs keep going can anyone recommend anything to help?
i have a bearded collie who is 14. His legs have been getting worse for a while occasionly falls down last few steps of stairs and hesitates before going down stairs (yet insists on going up them). Since yesterday he started falling over and walking sideways were going to take him to the vets as i have a feeling he may have had a stroke as his balance isn't as good as normal and he seems to be walking a bit sideways now . we've fitted a stiar gate so he cant use the stairs and his bed downstairs etc but was wondering if theres anything people can reccomend to help his rear legs? thank you in advance

Get it to the vets asap. Our dog had the same issue. Had to have a big operation on his back in the end as some discs had moved (and we didn't hang about. First time his legs went we took him in)

Honey 14 is a fantastic age for a collie!! It goes to show youve obvioulsy really looked after him.
Unfortunately i think it is inevitable that old age is probably just catching up with him right now.
Get him to the vets as soon as ya can tomorrow, and they will be able to tell you whats what.
The main thing to bear in mind is, make sure he has still got his quality of life, as long as he is pain free and can pee and poo unaided and get outside ok, the vet may just give you some painkiller type things for him!

Sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to my German Shepard, the vet was a great help though and gave her a happy life for almost a year. Get to the vet! Well, your dog..

our old lassie dog (cant remember what collie it is again) lol lived to 14 too, the vet advised some anti inflametry tablets when we went before so we've been giving him them but his too smart and digs them out his food lol . he's still walking etc unaided his balance is just wobbly when free standing. What dont help him either is his retnor was never joined up from birth so best his vision has ever been is about 1ft and now with age thats detieriated so he bumps into things

not nice to hear this.
and im not taking the pee,im being 100per cent serious, but if he/she is having probs with the legs its due to age this far in.
arthritis, hip dysplacia likely. now this may sound odd but if you dont want the risk of an op and he isnt too bad,you can get wheels that you strap to the back end of the dog and they trot along with the front, pulling the backs with them.
may sound odd but ive seen it work once the dg gets usd to the unit.
please dont think im being funny.
i would be in pieces if it was my two,and they live for running!

Bullett - my mum had those wheels for one of her dogs!!!
Paul - if he is digging the tablets out of his food, try wrapping them in something he likes! put them in a bit of ham, or a lump of cheese!!! he'll wolf them straight down!!

sounds a good age for a collie nothing worse than you dog or cat or any animal you have loved for years and brought up like your own kid and they get like this but by the sounds of thing you must be really caring and a good freind to your doghope you or the vet can get him better

My bulldog has had problem with his joints now he is 8... I had tablets from the vets which cost a fortune but they didnt really help. I was recommended Joint aid and within a couple of weeks there is a definate improvement. Its Ł50 a bucket but it last for ages.I tend to give him a scoop of joint aid and then a tea spoon of cod liver oil...defo worth a try. Best stuff on the market

I had the same with my golden retriever for a few years, as Metpol said we used to give him codliver oil tablets hidden in some sort of food and this made a big difference to him.
Hope all goes ok, i was gutted when i lost mine.

My labrador had hip displacia.... his legs got weak towards the end of his life and from about the age of 12 he was on steroid tablets which seemed to help a great deal. I wouldn't recommend it though. The steroids kept him going, as did the younger dog we had at the time and he seemed in great spirits. But his heart gave up in the end.

Try keeping him away from the stairs if you can! i've kept my rotts away from stairs all their lives! partly coz my mum dont want em f**king the upstairs where all the carpet and furniture is.
always been worried about this as big dogs can suffer from this!
hope the soldier stays strong mate

cheers for all the advice guys, the dog swimming sounds a good idea. we just took him to the vets and the thinks he may have doggy outsyma's (sp?) and has prescribed some tablets for him to help the blood flow to his brain and on top of that were going to have to push him to exercise more as his leg muscle is wasting away and we want him to keep healthy as he's a great dog and i think he'll live beyond 15 with help

we just took him to the vets and he thinks its like doggy outsima's (sp?) so he prescribed tablets to help the blood flow to his brain and were going to push him to take longer walks as he's been stubborn lately and his muscles are wasting away on his back legs sadly

We had our collie for 18 years and he had a similar issue to what you describe, unfortunately there is nothing* that can be done.(*in our case) I told the Vet to give our dog any treatment needed as money was not an issue, and the Vet told us the best thing we could do was to put the Dog to sleep.
Its def a moment that I will never forget and all the cliche's people tell you and lead you to believe, but until you have to do it, you cant explain or understand it.
