Does anyone know anything about wireless networking?
Going to network 2 Pc's at home tonight, and want to do it wirelessly with 802.11G.
Will two Belkin 11G cards do the trick? Do i need to use a router at all for only 2 Pc's?
Ive done a bit of networking over the years but never for only 2 Pcs and never wireless. Best ive used is 100mbps switch hub and 6machines on std cat cable... wireless is new to me
*Edited for spelling

Wireless should be easy enough to install mate, just use the drivers provided, set the hub up and the pc's will find it!
(Edit, just re-read your post about no hub, never tried that one! With normal Cat-5 cabel you need a 'crossover' cable to go from one pc to another directly, but I think wireless might need an access point (i.e. hub))
Make sure you set a security key with it being wireless..
From my personal experience I prefer cable if possible! Its faster and generally quicker to respond (lower ping) plus we couldn't get our wireless router to cover even half the house
And i'm a bit iffy wireless things, its kind of like having your mobile phone always on beaming around the house! Not sure if it's good for you!

I'm pretty sure that you need a hub to manage the two cards but I could be wrong. I just setup a wireless network at my flat it took all of about 20 minutes with XP on both computers.
Just as Phil said make sure you setup the SSID just give it any name and then create a key 64bit should be fine just come up with a 10 number sequence. By default DHCP will be turned on so you don't have to worry about any of those settings. Just enter the same information into the network card settings and you will be up and running.
Speed is down a little from wired but I'm still getting 347KBS downloading the new U2 CD.

Conflicting thoughts then guys?
Im going to try her without a hub as i reckon wireless is higher tech than the old crossover cat cables and should be able to deal with the I/O itself...
Tried searching teh net but it generally all refers to a hub due to a network normally having more than 1 client machine...
I just want the kids to be able to use the internet downstairs without having to have access to my Por, erm, i mean PC

Wireless between two machines should work fine......it's the equivalent of using a crossover cable. Just remember to set the cards up in "ad-hoc" mode (computer-to-computer) and not "infrastructure" mode (computers-to-router), and you should be fine. I think that's the right way round, but it should say when you're setting up.

Yup, this is right
Be sure to set up encryption, 64k should do it and you'll have a slight performance increase than 128 or 256 if you kits capable of it
If you get really stuck with it pm me and I'll send you my phone number and I'll talk you through it.
cheers,

Ok can someone help me with mine then before i go fucking mental.
I'm absolutely fuming at the moment, my piss is proper boiling and i'm ready to smash these two fucking PC's right up.
Setup like this:-
Cable modem to PC-1 using 10/100 PCI LAN card.
PC-1 too PC-2 connected via wireless PCI cards using AD HOC protocol.
Got the PC's networked, recognise each other fine. Even had them accessing each others files for a while.
But can I fuck get PC-2 to access the net. Seriously seriously furious at the min.
Ran Internet Connection Sharing wizard on PC-1 then the same on PC-2. And still nowt.
I've had them networked up via 10/100 PCI cards and just bog standard cable before...so whats the bloody difference?!!!?!??
Did notice that I can't get a Gateway IP for PC-2...should there be one for PC-1?

just get a wireless router, connect router to PC1 with cable, then route PC 2 to router wirelessly if its miles away, surely this would work as this is how i will be doing mine

**for a while? are they not working anymore? if not this would be your problem, if they are still networking though but just not accessing the net then its not
***You need to run ICS on PC-1 and ICS client on PC-2, have you run the former on both? If so PC-2 think it has a direct connection to the net and hence it wont get a default gateway via PC-1 as it will have its own static address, probably 192.168.0.1
****check that PC2 is setup for DHCP off PC1 and not running a static IP

We use for people at work ie Laywers\Partners and IT Staff : Draytek
its wireless has built in firewall, encryption and is a sensible price it gives out dhcp address's can take 4 cat 5 connections (incase u get visitors) plus wireless connections and depending on whether its a desktop or laptop either a draytek usb wireless card for a pc or a usrobotics card for a laptop if they dont have their own (but most of em do now)
make sure u lock it down correctly dont want the neighbours ragging you ADSL

Evil franky, check that your second pc is not set to dial a connection in the internet options window. Also if you have a firewall installed, make sure its configured to allow lan connections.

Eagle,
Nake sure they are both on the same network, right click on my computer, left click properties, go to computer name and make sure the workgroup is the same.
Then set the ip address of pc 1 to 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 and then on pc 2 set ip to 192.168.0.2 and subnet 255.255.255 reboot both computers, and then on pc 1, click start, run, and type in cmd and press enter. Then type in ping 192.168.0.2 and press enter, should ping with 32 bytes of date

Right, both machines have to have a name, now there's 2 ways to do this, use the network neighbourhood icon, or my network places, or, as i prefer to do it, click start, click run, and type in \\(and the name of your pc) and then press enter, it should then bring up the shared folders on the other pc now, depending on what you share, will determine what folders you will see

Check all the network settings, and make sure the internet connection is still shared, i've never tried it, but the 2nd pc should be able to ping a website, so open cmd in the run box, and ping www.passionford.com
