I drove a sapphire RS at the weekend, it had 18" Focus RS alloys on and 215 35 18, Good year tyres on all round, grippy on the rear in the dry and good on the road in the wet... or so I thought untill being out driven in the wet by a Rover metro on std steel rims and Toyo R 888s!

The front of the cossie had good turn in for a quarter turn of the wheel but felt vague and V.light after that- it really didnt give me confidence on the turn in. I was told that the tyre profile was to blame and the metro had loads of grip left in it through the fronts so Im after some advice.

What street legal tyres are best to run on a 300bhp RWD sapphire, I have lips removed and the arches rolled as per GpA spec so plenty of room for a higher than 35profile if I go 8x18s and wider than 235 on the rear or am I best fitting 8.5" wide 17"s or? What tyre sizes and profiles do you recommend and what have you used, I want my car to handle so those that have a proven setup need only reply

BTTT, or does nobody actually know why they have fitted low profile tyres on big ass rims, is it just for looks??? would a 17" set of wheels be better.
I have 7x17"s, 8x17"s and 8x18"s to choose from, any advantage to each size for a grippy circuit car?
