Any builders give me some tips for pointing?
Our garden wall needs repointing pretty desperately, some bits of the wall have about an inch of mortar missing in quite large sections, and i wanna get the repointing done before it gets really cold and wet tbh....
any hints and tips greatly appreciated, weve got a trowel and bought bags of cement from b&q that you just add the water to. Gonna mix a small amount first to see how i get on doing it and then crack on doing the rest if i manage ok.
I cant see it being that hard really?

It'd be best to chase out all of the existing pointing, buy a chasing out chisel it'll be easier than using a bolster, no point in pointing in bits here and there really.
Using a small trowel I normally just fill it in, everyone has their own way of doing it & its quite hard to explain but I dont put too much on the trowel otherwise it just drops all over the place. You'll want a nice smallish trowel and board - dont put too much on the board or your wrist will soon ache ha ha
No doubt theres some vids on youtube!

go to bradfords, get a pointing in tool, ask someone and they will get you one, then a small trowel, and a soft brush.
The whole point of this objective is not to get it all over the face of the brick, it will look totally shit if you do.
Take out any cement that is going to show when you point, you want to make it look like you have pointed in the whole lot, not just bits, it will look crap.
The rest is technieque (spelling) just dont go wacking loads on as 90 % will end up down the brick face. Use small amounts, I would go for a thing long bit on the edge of the trowel, make sure its small enough to go in the joint, make sure you fill the joint right up, push it in other wise it will just crack and look pants.
Once done, use the soft brush to brush away any excess and to smooth any joints that look a bit pants
Also, when pointing, its easyer to do the vertical joints, then do the straight joints after, then brush
Get some pics up of what it looks like when you are done, also, you dont really need to pay a builder to do it, its dead simple, just need to take your time

im a bricky the way we do it is use a 4inch grinder with a diamond blade, grind out at least 20mm of old/damaged compo, wet the wall before you start theres less chance of the compo falling out when you push it into the joint,as above start with the perp joint then the bed joint, use a 3/1 mix for a stronger job, good luck,if you get stuck we charge 13quid a square m2 lol!

how many m2 in the wall??
or if you are too tight you can borrow my grinder and pionting disc to get the depth right ,seen so many people make there walls look worse with a bad job, pointing is an art lol

its about 8ft high and maybe about 15ft long where it needs pointing, most of it is on the outside where it needs doing, the inside isnt too bad, so regardless of how shit it looks we wont have to actually look at it, as long as its pointed and not looking ready to fall down is the main priority.
Im gonna give it a go tomorrow ill take some pics before and after
