any opinions on these please?
started looking thru the trader at 1.4 16v clios around the 03 plate range for the misses, but started noticing that theres a fair few 2000/2001 clio 172's now for reasonable money.
my only ever experience with a renault was about 13/14 years ago and it left a bad taste in my mouth, but have they moved on in the form of reliability?
could they still be a nice small sporty hatch to be driving about in without the worry of it being less reliable than the cossie!?!?![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
any input greatfully appreciated (any yes its possible that i may not buy one - but its nice to have thoughts in the head and weigh up posibilities!)

Kelv - i think they are cracking little motors, especially for track use hence why I bought mine!!
There are the usual rogue cars out there just like any manufacturers vehicles but on the whole they tend to be reliable - only basic things go wrong - coilpacks, temp sensors, TDC sensor etc - make sure its had the cambelt & aux belt done as well mate - even though Renault recommend them being done around the 76k mark ALOT snap at 36k+

i bought one a few weeks ago. on a run at around 70-75 it does 40+ mpg, which i find amazing, though with me crusing at 95 and give it a littel it's now down to 33ish..lol
firm ride, more toys on the ph2's
mine has a cable throttle and they prone to eating cables and TB's
i've replaced the cable, and TB should be here this weekm apart from that, nice sturdy car (for a reno )

As it happens i bought one last week, great little cars imo loads of extras on the full fat models.. Ive got mine going in for the dreaded cambelt change on friday & a service as said belts need to be done every 5 years or 72k, also check if you get one with climate that its functioning properly apparently its a common fault ... Mines stuck blowing cold air at the min so not so great in the mornings
... Depending on what your use to i wouldnt say they were particulaly fast but they do go ok.& the handling is spot on no roll etc just watch out for abit of lift off over steer when pushing them hard.... Just waiting for some decent weather so i can give mine a clay & polish to get it looking its best![Banana](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/banana_dance.gif)

yeah, we had a good play, and it supprised me,
i'd like to have another play, with no passengers in either car and see how it
i still think it will be bloody close, as you can really pedal the car

LOL.
just curius then, adding up bits in my head - but what size tyres do they use?
going to look at a silver one in a short while - W plate, 68k and fsh etc.

ive had 4 or 5 that ive bought or sold. They all have exhaust problems but they are nippy cars. Wouldnt say fast though.
Good handling other than the front slides if youre giving it too much but so do most front wheel drive cars.
Bit plasticy but if you was gonna buy a clio anyway then you know all about that.
They are good for the money though.

Mate has had his 1.5(?) diesel extreme from new (o4 plate), been perfect. Yes a bit plastic inside, but been fine as a daily driver, although he is selling to buy a banger (wedding funds, doh!!).
Think there is one in the sale section 3500k in black, looks nice.
172 are cheap as chips and look nice IMO so a good option for the money.
