Default a spare yb....?

a local lad has a yb for sale but has no documented proof on any engine works done. he said its had the rings and a recon head done 20000 miles ago but as it isnt his original engine the complete mileage is unknown. it seems to run ok with no obvious worrying signs. i want it as a spare to strip down and rebuild myself to eventually put into my touring before selling on my own engine.
what should i expect to pay for such an engine? its on a stage 1 chip and a t34? without documented proof id always expect the worst?
is it worth a grand or should i be knocking him down (not literally)?

oh yes , its a 2wd on a 200 block but the blocks been welded at the alterator mounts after a heavy crash pre his ownership apparently. standard t34.63.not smokey apart form a little puff on over run after hard boost.

Check the crank sizes, and head depth, and the bore size if possible. Anything other than std/std or 0.25 in the crank and it would be a waste of time, again anything over 0.25 on the block would mean that you only have +1mm on the bore if anything is wrong with it. Would want to see over 138.7 on the head as well, or again you are into worrying territory if anything is wrong with it and needs a skim etc....

Personally I would ask him to remove the head, and whip the sump off to have a good look, if it is all on big oversizes or has any significant wear then it is not really worth it IMHO...
