how do i shrink a file ? need it to be smaller ?
ive got a 8.39gb file and i need it to be smaller ? if i could get it to 6gb it would be ok ?
anyone know how to do it ?

depends on the type of file to be shrunk, if its a text based file then it will compress well, but things like avi's etc don't compress very well and its unlikely that you will attain the shrunk size you are after. if however you merely need to split the files so that you can store it, then winrar, will allow you to do that by splitting the file into lots of chunks that can be put back together again afterwards, but backed up over several dvd's.

its a avi file . if i can get it to about 6gb then i can use my prog to shrink it onto a 4.7dvd but at the moment its 8.39gb . think i will just have to buy a few bigger dvds ?

You need to split the file mate. You can't shrink it to 6gb, then shrink it again to 4.7gb!
And avi files don't shrink at all as they are already compressed, the only way to make them smaller is to decrease the quality. So basically, split the file into 4.7gb chunks and burn away

its only for the dvd player in the car on a 7" screen so the quality aint got to be amazing ?
