Hi,
In relation to my other thread which I'm sure you have seen (loud tapping noise), I've just had a text off my mechanic mate who reckons its because I had the head skimmed
I have a power engineering stage 3 head. I have a receipt in the folder for about £400 which the guy who owned the car before me payed for. Now, would this be a brand new head with nothing skimmed off it or when companys supply an uprated head are they just heads that have been used and reconditioned so in theory my head could of been skimmed a few times before ?
Also, I did notice when we were grinding the valves they wouldnt come out, we could pull them about half way and they would just jam. Whats that all about ?
cheers, Duncan

valves are pretty tight anyway, when i rebuilt mine i just gave them a very light clean up on the lath with some very fine emory tape.
when you took the head off did you have valve contact marks on the top of the pistons?

You should still not get valve to piston contact on a Turbo engine.
Your engineer is looking for excuses by the sounds of it!!!!
Possibly bent valves or the top face that is in contact with the rocker arm has worn and expanded.

If the valves wont come out to the end at least, they are quite simply already bent, any mechanic should know that pal
As for skimming the head, makes no odds pal unless youve taken stacks off it, if the cam timing is correct, the valve to piston clearance should be fine.

The ends of the valves tend to mushroom and make contact at the guide when removing them. If you force then you should have the guides replaced or at least reemed.

they didnt look bent when we pulled them out half way and there were no marks at all on the pistons to indicate contact between the two, they also seated correctly as well. When we pulled them out it wasnt that they gradually got harder to pull as that would indicate a bent stem wouldnt it, they were loose and then they just stopped dead about half way down.
