Picky twat.
you're going to end up buying another M3 for 5K, spending 3K on it again, and then be further in debt and not be able to afford to actually use it
where as my way would be.
non sport 328 + 3 way diff = having a laugh and spending almost bugger all

I'm struggling to see the logic here.....
When someone suggests you buy a cheap runaround you say that's beside the point as you're not totally potless and you don't need a car.
Fair enough
But
You don't want a car that you're going to spunk a load of cash on because you want to pay of your debts.
Seeing as you don't need a car, people have suggested why buy one at all? Use your cash to pay off your debts, then when you're more flush, buy what you want.
A sensible suggestion,
But
You want a car now as a bit of fun.
Fair enough
You're saying running costs aren't a problem as you don't need to do any mileage other than for fun.
So
Why do you then dismiss a 200sx as being too pricey to run?
You want a fun car, you're not worried about running costs or using the car every day, but it's got to be nice and cheap to buy.
So what's wrong with the 200sx?
The 328i would be nicer if you had to drive it a lot and racked up high miles, but for a piece of out and out fun seems like an odd choice.
Sure if you really want one then no one can argue your point, it's what you want, but to me, there seems to be no logic in your arguments for and against that, and I think you should move direction completely for the time being as if you got a cheap 328i (not knocking them, love them myself) it would come as a big let down after driving what is by your own admission, a very cherished example of an M3. It'd like you'd have the same as before but quite a way short.
That's my 2p anyway

Mike C, he wants something that he can regulate his spending on, ie if he wants to spend money and do a trackday he will.
If he buys a 200sx, odds are that with how he drives, he will brake it, and more importantly, he knows he couldnt resist turning the boost up, and if he brakes it, that means spending that he isnt in control of.

So, it must be a car that doesnt scream "spend money on me" in terms of mods/upgrades, can't be turbocharged.
But must be RWD, it must be reasonably cheap to buy and must stand out from the crowd.
Well, to me, any E36 does scream "spend money on me", especially if you've just come out of owning an exceptionally good example and you obviously like the Sport/M models...
Other than that, fair enough, it fits the bill.
As far as an alternative goes that doesn't shout out that it needs modding, errrm, Mercedes 190 Cosworth?
Why not an E39 5-series? Bit of a change, so not a direct comparison to the M3. Less likely to spend loads on it, but still pushes the right buttons.

What donor?
It goes like this:
Buy 325/328 - fit seats - fit springs - fit tyres - do some trackdays in reasonable but not particuarly quick reliable car
if it goes wrong and is still driveable, i go and fetch it (i see jim once a week on average anyway I reckon), drop off my audi (courtesy car tastic) and I fix the 325, if it goes wrong and isnt driveable he sends it to me with the AA and I drop it back off to him when its sorted.
job jobbed

Right, now, my suggestion is:
Assuming Jim has Ł3000 to spend (I don't know how much he wants to spend, but it can be adjusted a tad either way and still add up).
Jim buys an E39 520i/523i/525i/528i for Ł2500.
Jim gives remaining Ł500 to Chip who puts it towards a 325i/328i track project.
Jim gets a nice car to drive on the road and a perfectly good car to abuse on the track with very very little worry of what to when it goes bang/gets binned, has less to spend on track days, fuel plus whatever else goes with it.
Chip also gets that luxury, as does anyone else in on the track project.
Win/Win
IMO
(Or an alternative is Jim simply spends the Ł500 or hoever much he fancies on the track project and doesnt bother with the other car. He says he doesnn't need a car, just wants one for the fun side of it. If he has a track car to abuse, does that satisfy his needs on its own? I don't know, but it's an option)

Then still spend the other Ł500 on the track E36
or as per edit, spend Ł900 on the track E36 and Ł100 on a nice pair of walking boots
Edited again, I can't keep up!
Well any 328i for Ł1000 is going to be a shitter anyway is it not?
I would say RS2000/RS1800 or something then, but he won't want FWD

im guessing a 5 series will be more pricey for something of similar spec to a 3 series? I did get offered an E34 525i earlier for a grand
also re: 200sx, i just looked em up on autotrader and theyre not as cheap as i thought they were anyway.

Personally if I was in your position I'd buy me a cheap redtop Nova & have loads of fun, be quicker than a lot of car's on track, cheap to run & cheap to fix just until I was in a better position to buy something else
But knowing you that's not going to happen so for that reason I'm out

Why is everyone banging on about track days. From what I've read Jim doesn't want a track car, he wants a comfy, sporty cruiser thats going to help him shag NON religous burds!!
And lets face it, if he shows up for a date in a Nova he's not getting his dick wet that night......
