Quite surprised by that seeing as the 325 has an iron bottom end and the 328 is a nicasil or steel linered alloy block. I'd be surprised if the 325 was significantly lighter? Got any exact figures?

The 325 is a "revvier" engine in character though, the 328 was specifically tuned to be torquey and strangled at birth for German tax law.

Also the M3s are pretty fuel efficient so a 328i wouldn't save you much money on juice like for like - parts are a fair bit cheaper though

A 328i with the 325i inlet manifold and a larger TB will make a good 30bhp over standard. They engineered a restriction into the inlet so the car would make less than 193bhp to get into the lower tax band for germany. Besides, the 328 came with better wheels, better suspension, better toys, etc

Whatever you think is best though Jim, will be a BIG step down from an M3 though.

what i was trying to advocate here is as follows (and i'll try and keep it short so people who't get bored )

i'm going to reply as if i were jim here

jim will have Łx amount of cash to furnish himself with a new car to replace the m3
jim has Ły amount of debt
if jim were to put the whole Łx into reducing Ły as opposed to "earning enough to pay off the intrest" then that would be my first port of call
then i would sit around with a gruop of friends who wish to get a track car and decide what would be best to suit our requirements and have everyone chip in for it
the car would still be registered as jims motor for the reasons of log book, insurance, road tax, paperwork etc but every "owner" would have the right to punt it around a track should they feel the urge
if they wanted to back out at any time then the other parties would buy them out
it worked perfectly well with the reyland sierra where 2 guys bought a car and did it up, why would it not work the same if 5 guys bought a car and did the same?

obviously, i'm not jim so this is only my way of doing things

Dojj, I did mention to jim as im looking for a cheap track hack still and he only needs an occasional use car that me and him ought to just both get a 325/328 between us and then he can use it on the road as well as it can then be stored at his place which is doing me a favour anyway.
(if he can put up with buckets and no sound proofing on the way to essex rsoc meets etc though?)

to be honest chip, i think jim's going to either think things through properly and wait a while and then decide what he's going to buy and how he's going to go about getting it tracked up etc

or

he's going to go and blow loads of money on another m3 and regrest it in about 4 days time

but i hope it's the first option using the bits of the bent m3 to upgrade a 325/8

It's something to discus tonight, but my first impressions are that its a bad idea as i dont want to drive a track car on the road. i want creature comforts.

Fair enough mate.

Maybe we can reach a compromise, like some relatively comfy reclining front buckets, and everythign else left in for now, but with a welded diff.

Woudlnt be as fast as all stripped out, but would still be a good giggle

If its gets crashed whoever bins it is a grand out of pocket, no big deal.

Half the price of a trackday, half the driving, half the tyres, and half the fuel, is a lot cheaper than paying out in full, plus we would maintain it ourselves (me spanners, jim making cups of tea) not keeping putting it into the garage for every little thing like Jim did, so he can hopefully have half the fun of the M3 but at a quarter of the price effectively!

but he's going to fork out for half ot it so that's half the cost already
and the donor car is going to cost less than half the cost of replacing the m3
and you won't be dropping it off round the corner everytime you think somethings gone wrong with it (you'll drop it to chip who is miles away )

What donor?

It goes like this:
Buy 325/328 - fit seats - fit springs - fit tyres - do some trackdays in reasonable but not particuarly quick reliable car

if it goes wrong and is still driveable, i go and fetch it (i see jim once a week on average anyway I reckon), drop off my audi (courtesy car tastic) and I fix the 325, if it goes wrong and isnt driveable he sends it to me with the AA and I drop it back off to him when its sorted.

job jobbed

my trackcar is coowned. works well if owners are on the same wavelength. If someone loses interest thou the other need to be ready to buy them out. My car has sat doing nothing since we broke it at bedford, and its so annoying as if it was only my car it would be done and in use again.
