because you know one day he will need a car and he wont have one.

and for the minimal cost of something like a 325 / 328, then whats the problem?

Yes - I'm quite sure that the 325 engine is a fair bit lighter.

the 328 has a bit more torque, but both have ~190bhp.

328 won't be that much better on fuel, but will be massively better on insurance and servicing, as I'm sure you know!

I only have my M3 as an occasional car. Certainly wouldn't drive it everyday.

328 is a good choice imo.

Guessing trips to the Nurburgring probably count as extravagant spending though, wouldn't you agree?

dear jim,

in reply to your "bean on toast" letter i sugest you try the following options:

use the cheapest beans you can find, even though hienz make the best beans, tesco el cheapo brand are only 8p a can
you can also make considerable savings by buying the cheapest breads available, some are upwards of £1.50 a loaf so there is a considerable saving to be made if you combine both the bread and beans into the equation

better still would be to buy a can of beans and, equiped with a spoon, eat them cold, thus saving the cost of the bread and the cost of the electricity requierd to heat them up and toast the bread as well as the savings you will make on water and cleaning facilities due to not having a plate to wash up afterwards, only a spoon you can lick clean and wipe down with a tissue

the journey to the supermarket to buy the beans can be made by foot and, if you secrete the can of beans into your pocket you can warm it up suffificently for it not to be "cold" by the time you reach home and eat them

doing this several times a week will not only save you several pounds to helkp towards cleaing your debt, the noxious smells emitting from your posteriour will also drive away anyone from inviting you to spend the night "at the pub" where you can save more money by not partaking in femented beverages

this was a free service bought to you by j.i.m. (jim isn't minted) R

LOL very easy to say and a lot harder to do.

Besides mine was fairly mint - just 10k and lots of trackday (not as many as Jim does in a month) and it died!

Jim,

the way you can cut down on actually owning a car is not to book it into an expensive garge for every little thing. YOu can do some of the work. You have mates like me and Chip who will help you.

Indeed, this is exactly what I was saying to him, and same goes for trackdays etc, just jump in wiht other people and save the fuel up and back etc.

Save up like mad, put it with what paul gives him, and he can clear his debts and get a decent car outright in no time at all.

Jim how old are you if you don't mind me asking and I presumeyou still live at home?
It shouldn't be a case of clearing your debts it should be clearing your debts then saving for the future it's a big world out there and you have no idea how much it really costs to live, you need to look to were you wanna be in 10-15 years.

I was like you in my early 20's every penny I had went on cars and beer, I saw the light took time out to save, I now I live in a nice big house with a small mortgage compaired to it's value, have 5 cars all paid for and can at 36 enjoy my cars again without to much financial worry. and no my earnings didn't suddenly rise!

Jim, get a 318iS. They're cheap, economical and if you get an M-Tech one it even looks like an M3.

theyre more expensive than a 328, more or less the same to insure, and dog slow in comparison. already thought about that one

as i said, fuel costs are not a concern

Well if you can afford the fuel then good choice, just make sure if you get an early 328 it's had a new block.

jim, buy a small sensible car with a wee tiddlyompom engine that will do 600 mpg and use that until the right car comes along

that way you won't be spending silly money on the wrong car to get it right and you will be saving money in the long term as well

besdies, these little cars tend to hold on to their value so in a year you can sell it for what you aid for it, with the added benifit of it being easy to replace should you deicide to lend it to someone who might possibly bend it into a frying pan

dojj, which bit of the "im not commuting, its only for occasional pleasure use so MPG is of no importance" thing didnt you understand?

if he wants a little car to run around in, he can just use him mum's, but he doesnt, he wants something half reasonable for occasional use, he wants to cut back spending, he isnt fussed about spending nothing at all though, just wants to cut back a bit.

True, but the 325's had a problem with plastic impellers on the water pump.
