Default Big Thanks to Rob (castle combe today)

Went to castle combe today and took Rob's astra out for a couple of sessions.

Truely fantastic car that now, cant believe how well it was handling, I was going steady with it as Ive not driven it before in its current guise (I last drove it 4 years ago and it was a totally different car then really, only the shell remains) and of course cause its not my car etc so was easing off the power and braking a lot sooner than I would have done if it was my own car, but was still going round in 1:26 which is pretty respectable at combe with so much traffic, we was a couple of seconds quicker again, and im sure it will drop into the 'teens when its all fully sorted, as today was only really intended as a shakedown, still some suspension tweaks to be done and he's only running .7 bar at the moment, out of potentially about 2 bar when its fully mapped up, so probably about 150bhp down on what it will be when its all finished.

Really really enjoyed it, thats the best fun ive had on track for quite a few years.

Thanks mate, your a legend

Yeah even on its current boost settings just for a shakedown, it was still quick, probably about the same pace as a 400bhp cossie roughly Id guess but with only about 300bhp, the benefits of light weight!

Thanks for the compliments, we were certianly going quicker than most.

amazing to think there is another 150bhp+ yet to come.

Traction was awesome, I had a very tiny bit of slip coming out of the first chicane but only on 1 wheel and the quaiffe soon sorted it out so I never had to lift, we were literally full power right from every apex, so its definately got the potential to use some more power in parts of the track when its fully mapped, not sure I'll ever go much quicker in it, someone elses car and all that, so even when it is mapped up, I think i'll be clicking it back down to low boost for my sessions probably!

1.6 low comp cvh turbo engine
hyrbid turbo
uprated injectors
mapped at msd
around 200-210bhp @ 18psi
nothing to special

h&r coilovers
300mm focus st170 brakes

just needs a diff and some better tyres and will be able to acclerate out of corners hard

Sadly I didnt get to do much spectating so I managed to miss that one as well.

Sounds like your spin didnt end in any damage though, thats the main thing.

It was surprising how many people noticed how well the astra was doing, we had people coming up literally all day in the pits commenting on it

Most were shocked to here me tell them I was taking it slightly steady in places, and we were about 150bhp down on full power, lol

Yeah abit of a slide held it then touched the grass which span me 360. Luckly no damage tho.. Did get abit slippery near the end tho.

The Astra did look solid on the corners look like it handled well.

LOL, sounds like a bit of fun then.

Yeah it really was surprisingly good on the bends.

I was bottling it at folly though and backing off a touch rather than going through flat out, im sure it probably could have managed it, but at 130mph in someone elses car, I figured I would sooner be coming off the throttle than staying on it, lol

Scarey thing is, it will probably be pulling nearer 150mph going into folly when its at full power, and utterly no chance of it making through there at that speed, lol

Yes Richie, he was on 888's

Even in the wet at over 130 through folly on his last run when he really started to find big bollocks.

That thing is going to RAPE your cossie round track when its on full boost, so I hope your KA can give it a run for its money

thanks chip it was a pleasure letting you go in the drivers seat, when you took al out it really did show me how fast it is :O watching you come out of camp it was unreal the amount of distance you would pull over most other cars.

with regards to how the car performed in the corners(we knew it would be quick down the strights) im just shocked, yesterday was ment to be a bit of fun and a nice steady ish track day, but the way the car handled was behond any of my expectations.

the car still has not been set up in anyway, i fitted the R888's on saturday morning and raised the car so they did not catch i then got a tape messure and just made sure both sides were about the same height, and that was the set-up LOL.

really looking fwd to getting a little more power as there were times when i felt it needed more,

but all in all not a bad day for a car not set up with a ecu in limp home mode!!!!!! map sensor gave up on the way up and with having no air flow meter the ecu dropped into limp home mode. LMFAO

Rob, agreed, it felt like it had just been properly setup, so I think by pure luck, you are pretty close on the suspension but im sure there are still some gains to be had if you get it on corner weigh scales etc

Camp was definately somewhere that it was working very well indeed, felt SO planted, and the pace out was funny, did you notice from the engine not though that in the interests of mechanical sympathy I was doign that bend in 4th every time, and just relying on the midrange grunt to haul me out the corner?!
