ST170 is better built and far nicer inside in my opinion, but then again it is the model up from the fiesta so you'd expect this. They are similar performance wise i think, fiesta maybe has a slight edge?
I'd have the focus any day over a fiesta.

I've got an st170, its not as quick in a straight line as most would think, however it loves the twisties, round roundabouts at 6500 rpm with the back wheel in the air has never been so much fun! VVT is addictive, and the 6 speed getrag box is a bit notchy, but very precise and unbreakable.
The handling on them is really well sorted, i do a fair few miles in mine, and love it to bits. Make sure you get the xenon light/climate control option though, quite hard to find but well worth it.
The only downside is fuel economy, mine takes Ł55ish to fill up, and does 280 miles, 320 if driven like a granny!!!

I ran my old one for 20,000 miles over 18 months and it was great. Apart from routine servicing i only had to change the clutch master cylinder (1hr job)!
Not a particularly brilliant move if you are going to do shitloads of miles in as they are a little thirsty.
I've driven the fiesta st and the only way i can describe it is 'puppylike' - it's like a little puppy that just wants to play...
Focus felt more solid somehow.

My fiesta ST can get 40mpg on a steady run up to lancaster. If you kick it's head in expect around 27mpg.
I think some of you are confusing the build quality of the Mk6 Fiesta ST with the very good build quality of the MK6.5 Fiesta ST. They are two very different cars on the inside with a compeltely different dash.
Mine has now done 42k miles and isn't 2 years old yet. I drive hard most of the time and touch wood it hasn't yet failed mechnically on me YET.
I would say if you want a fun little car get a Fiesta ST150. If you want a car with 4 doors get a Focus, then cry
Fiesta all the way for me!

I've owned a couple of ST170's and a Fiesta ST.
The Focus is far better built. I wasn't impressed when I rested my leg against the Fiesta's transmission and centre console. The whole assembly moved around. IT seemed to only be held down in a couple of places.
Also, 70mph in the Fiesta is around 4000rpm which gets very draining very quickly. It's crying out for a six speed box, which the Focus has and puts to good use.
To also add, mpg is not good on either, certainly not what you might expect from a 2 litre engine. I got an average of 290 miles to 3/4 of a tank in the focus - roughly 31mpg. The Fiesta has a smaller tank and would get around 190 miles to 3/4 tank - roughly 25 mpg. Neither of the cars were driven particularly hard.
