Default Best VALUE FOR MONEY performance car?

ok, lets look at all the factors

obviously performance

purchase cost
modification costs
insurance costs
FUN factor
running costs
maintenance costs

what do we recon is going to be the best value for money performance car?

Off the top of my head the first few cars i'd think about here would be

Vaux Nova
Saph Cossie
E36 M3
Pug 205
200SX
R32 Skybus
MX5?

what do you recon guys?

all depends on whether you want t buy and maintain, or build.

An e36 M3 is a cheap performance bargain, but doing anything to them beyond keeping them good is fucking expensive, especially when you want more power.

an xe nova/corsa needs built, but is dirt cheap in reality, all parts are cheap, turbo engines if you want to go further bolt in etc, but theyre fwd and therefore a bit shit.

Have to agree with your list but also think that given a few years the Nissan GTR will be in amongst that list

R32 skyline, WTF you seen the price of parts for them ?

saph cossie,, sort of but again most parts are either fucked due to age or just expensive for no real reason

the rest i agree,,, well the nova aint true as its not available as a fun car as such

oh and i would HAVE to say impreza,,, but then again the suspension im about to buy for it will the roll bars ect bring the bill to almost 2k,, so that aint that cheep either i guess

MX5,,,,, nope dont agree, far too gay for me

OH suzuki swift gt thing,,, thats just fucking mental for a little car and i highly rate it

also the vtec hondas are good value too IMO

Impreza's seem to be going cheap now ?

4wd 200BHP turbo motor with plenty of potential from what i've seen.

But never owned one so couldn't comment on actual performance or running costs.

Rover Metro!!! cheap as fucking chips and with a VVC in they tend to go well. Easy to sort the suspension (just pump more fluid into them and individualise it), Easy to sort the brakes (MGF stuff) and it'll lose weight without you even having to touch it

Need to establish some criteria I reckon and give each car a score out of 10 and then total it all up.

nova 2 litre 16v
will push 150mph on the speedo while upsetting subaru drivers
will return a MINIMUM of 30mpg and over 40mpg on a good run
anything that breaks is cheap as its all standard stuff
can pick the whole lot up for a grand
is pre silly tax
insurance was cheap as chips for me too compared to a 200sx
all round winner

200SX gets my vote I reckon as a standard car, massive amount of car for the money IMHO

Nova valver as a modified car, as per above

I'd say without doubt a 95/96 Impreza WRX (260ps std) get one with a decat system and buy a scoobyecu chip (can be had for £40 off ebay now) and you'd have a quick little car circa 280bhp and they have a nice hit of acceleration.

I'd imagine the above could be achieved for circa £1800.. maybe less if you're good. I know someone who bought a grade 4 WRX at auction a few months back with loads of mods (inc custom map at scoobyclinic on esl chip) tracker, hks 3" exh, hks downpipe, new clutch, hks filter, cat 1 alarm, 18's, decent stereo etc etc for £1300 It was a cracking little car and went like a lizard drinking.

Whether you like them or not the performance and fun that car offered for feck all money made it a performance bargain!

Early Impreza WRX
E36 M3
MK3 Supra Turbo

and I reckon something that's been overlooked a little is the NA MK4 Supra. Sure it doesn't have the x-factor that a turbocharged car brings, but for less than £2k you could have a very good looking car with 6 cylinders, 220BHP or so and RWD. Not a fast car by any means, but a lot for the money IMO, and there's a far slower cars out there which people have talked about under this topic

E36 M3.
Out the box will do 160mph, 30mpg, handle ok, brakes will lock at 100 in dry, sound sexual above 5000rpm, pull from 1000 revs, comfortable, have lsd, engines go on forever and have itb's, and most importantly when you've got the wipers on and stop, they go to intermittent lol.

Am biased, but looked into many many cars before getting one and it ticked all the boxes.

Yes, good choice. I'm currently looking for one as a weekend toy. I'm after the STI RA.. nice short ratio box, only 125 flat out but they get there fast! DCCD to play with 4.4sec to 60 std etc Not that cheap compared to the rest of the early imprezas but should be good fun!

MR2 Turbo, you can pick an early one up for less than £1500. Insurance group 16 so not too bad. Lots of potential for tuning.
