Turning it off for gold members, is a very good suggestion.

Hell if spammers want to pay a tenner to send a few pm's then im sure its a good revenue stream for IB to keep deleting them, lol

Why hasnt IB enabled reCAPTCHA that comes with the 3.7 versions of vBulletin? Would have stopped all this crap from this start.

There is already a registration CAPTCHA. I'm assuming they are using humans to register at forums (to defeat the CAPTCHAs) and then simply handing the login cookies to programs that do all the IM spamming for them. Since the account is already registered, the cookies are legit and the spam programs aren't challenged...

...until they get to trying to send IMs, at which point they are presented with questions they must answer. Trying to get around this obstacle is more trouble than it's worth for the spammer, since they can just go to some other forum that doesn't have IM protection.

How about adding it to the log in page also, so if a human does register an account for the intentions of spamming the program wont get past recaptcha even if it has the cookies. Even go as far as adding a robots.txt and blocking all the bots.

I ran my website on vbulletin for nearly a year and using these methods and others I didnt encounter a single spam sign up.

Assuming that the PM spam is done by an automated program, all it needs is a set of valid login cookies. The human behind this effort has simply to register and log in, and he has those cookies. The existing CAPTCHA is probably keeping out a ton of opportunistic spambots, but when you have a human willing to spend 3 minutes registering and then handing off the operation to a program, it gets a little more complicated.

Then make a new usergroup (lets call it Group A as an example)

All new members go into this usergroup when first registering

Group A then has limited access to some forums

Only when that new member has made a minimum amount of posts (which can easily be moderated in controlled forums) are they then granted further access to remaining "free" forums and of course earn the priviledge to use the PM system

I use V.Bulletin and this is one of many measures I use to STOP Spam bots posting on my site

Common five-letter name for a device consisting of a turbine and a compressor, used to force air into an engine by extracting energy from exhaust gas.

People need to realise that the spam companies that get humans to register will only target the larger forums. I dont get any bots on my other 3 forums either, but then tahts ecause they arent worth targetting as they dont do anything like the 58 new users or 3000+ posts a day that passionFord gets.

We will stamp it out. I am currently vetting all new members personally, which will defeat 99% of them.

I'd be surprised if someone on PassionFord does not know the answer to this question.

You look in an engine bay and see a square metal box sitting on top of the engine. At the end of the box is a pulley, and a belt that goes to the crank pulley. It seems to be set up to force air into the engine. What is this called? (Hint <--- i need the hintbut it is not there

No it's not. No-one is buried in Grants tomb. It's a tomb, not a grave

Or they could spend 11seconds cut n paste the question into google, and get the answer, thus defeating the NosPM. I got asked yesterday when I tried to send a PM "The Escort RS Cosworth was released by which car company in 1992"

Google tells you that in 0.3 seconds, and if the spammer is human, which I beive they are judging by the replies they give, even they could work it out seeing as the site is called passionFORD and there's a forum for ESCORT RS COSWORTH

Stu, please can you get IB to turn the NosPM bit off for the following if possible:

Replies to PM's (as these by definition arent unsolicited)
Gold Member PM's
PM's sent by people with more than 1000 posts on the forum
(a spammer will NOT achieve that)

Thanks

Stu - for what am I apologising for? And what point have I missed? I read the thread, and my understanding of the implemention of the NosPM was because the bot has been replaced by human spammmers, and thus the CAPTUREs don't work anymore.

My point is, if you want to PM every member on PF, do you think a NosPM will thwart that? "oh no, I have to answer a question I can find the answer to in half a second, I won't bother sending this PM that took thirty times that long to compose"

So what point have I missed? If I genuinely have, I'll apologise, but I still don't know what that apology would be for....

because, accoridng to my reserach (ie reading the posts) the spam is sent by a bot (whatever they are) and so is automatic

and one of them bot thigns won't be able to figure out what google is and then put the question into it to extrapolate an answer

i'm sure mr admin so wanted everyone to give you a but i don't thin anyone will

also, benni, the answer isn't "hoova" either
