Default Phone replacement time

Need some advice on a new phone as I'm a bit out of touch with what's out there at the moment.

Currently got a Sony Ericcson W880i, but I'm wanting something a bit better.

I need a phone that has a very good ability to run like a personal organiser (calendar/notes, possible email access etc), inbuilt MP3 player, okay camera, but also be a small size and weight.

No flip or slide phones either.

Blackberry? I-phone?

Advice required.....

Couldn't do it Lee - hate the Nokias now, and wouldn't go back.

For the size, I'd rather have the I-phone. Ideally, just after something not on contract so I can go sim only.

From what you described you want from it, the iPhone is best suited for what you want Rich. It works perfectly with all internet based email systems, aswell as with ISP emails, aswell as with Microsoft Exchange, and of course Apple's MobileMe program (http://www.apple.com/mobileme/)

It's internet access is second to none - forget blackberry, there isn't another phone on the market that provides a good an internet browser as the iPhone, it's compatibility with Microsoft Exchange (and MobileMe, which is basically Exchange, for everyone else ) and Microsoft office document support (Word, Excell, PowerPoint, etc) is still better than virtually everything else - even better than smartphones running Windows FFS

OS X in Mobile form is one the most powerful mobile OS's currently available. And the addition of the app store and the Apple SDK means that virtually everypart of the iPhone can be modified and changed to allow functions it doesn't come from the factory with to work - such as MMS that everyone moans it can't do. Well it can, no problem. You just need the app for it (free). Push notification on virtually everything that's internet based (email, exchange, facebook, IM progs such as GTalk, IM, Aim, MSN etc...

If you want mobile access to digital life, then you'd be foolish to go for anything else

lol thrush pushuing the iphone, its falling over already on when pushed on 3g, connects to edge, high speed internet, nokia had 3.5g yonks ago, hspda works a treat, and as for mobile email on the go. you wont beat a blackberry

the mms is a 3rd party add-on, so support from apple and not 100%. as with most the iphones flaws, the availibilty of sdk has made it more attractive, go back to factory deliverys and its flawed,

the 3g issue i mentioned is rumored to be chipset flaw rather then software, althought apple as usual hasnt declared it official.

video recording on the iPhone 3G?.. Apple has seemed to neglect this feature on the iPhone 3G and let’s face it even low end mobiles have this ability these days.

The next failing is the lack of Flash; the iPhone is a very capable web browser with the ability to simply touch a link to grab a webpage makes surfing easy rather than a chore. The main problem is many websites are out of the iPhone 3G’s capabilities because of its Flash content,

Ok, so what about multimedia messaging service, well what about it, the iPhone 3G doesn’t support it that’s what. This must be one of the most maddening of disappointments with the iPhone 3G simply because there are millions of cheap mobile phones that do support multimedia messaging, and yet the super duper Apple iPhone 3G doesn’t

The next disappointment comes with the lack of cut and paste; it seems strange that this simple operation cannot be accomplished by the iPhone 3G. The total inability to cut a chunk of text and paste it into another app just rules out so much simplicity and also would make blogging from the iPhone 3G that much easier. What’s more is that it could be done without screwing with the iPhone 3G’s interface, so just why Apple decided against the cut and paste option is baffling to say the least.

And last but not least the lack of voice dialling; yes no voice dialling, so if you’re out travelling you’ll have to tap in that number rather than speak it. Back to the fumbling of fingers to get that call made.

its old tech and was a serious bit of kit 3 years ago. Its worth noting as well that Nokia and other company's got it right three years ago, the phone is still experiencing connectivity issues.
There are threads after threads over at the Apple forums and many others all over the internet

http://discussions.apple.com/thread....32695&tstart=0

this is without mentioning its enterprise connectivity support and security its not serious about anything other than being cool and taking your money

if you want to be in with the in crowd and be cool the iphone
if you want a device which is reliable, secure get the blackberry

Lee - not actually owned one, but I had a 2G on loan for a while, and a 3G loan recently, so I have had enough hours using them to form an educated opinion of them, as opposed to speculation

RANJ - As for 3G - it outperforms the HSDPA on my Nokia all day long, everytime. Of course, that's the OS that lets it use all it's bandwidth - every Nokia I have tried, most of which are on Symbian S60 platforms, strangle the incoming 3G data stream cos of the slow as hell OS.

Turbocabbie - Depends how much you want video recording. I don't use it, so it doesn't bother me. I also rarely use my Nokia's camera, except to take the odd snap to show someone or send it to someone, which on the iPhone can be done either via email or MMS, yes third party app, but thats the point of the SDK - third party apps, just like the majority of apps for smartphones are third party.

Flash - did you say it doesn't work? Strange, I have no problem with any YouTube video's, or YouPorn, or any other website with embedded media I have tried. Strange if it doens't support flash. Or do you mean it doesn't support flash as a media type for putting video's on the iPhone? Cos if thats the case - why would you? MP4 is a much better format. My Nokia has a flash player built in, and I've not managed to get a flash video working on it (as in a flash file transfered to the phone) cos of it's incredibly limited codec pack. And my Nokia also says it supports MP4, which isn't completely true as whilst it records video from the camera in MP$, if you transfer an MP4 video to the phone, it simply says INVALID FILE TYPE and won't play it. So my phone only plays 3GP video's, which are worse than FLV's!

Voice dialling - don't think I have ever used it, other than for about 5mins for a laugh. Then decided it was pointless and never used it again. I found it quicker, every time, to dial the number manually and press call. Voice dialling on every Nokia I have ever tried has been dead slow, innacurate unless in a silent room, and pointless. Plus you look like a complete cock standing there shouting "HOME" at your phone I either just use speed dialling (which with the iPhone you simply press the home key for 1.5secs and you get your list - one touch and its' dialling) or the phone book - which again, is a far better, and more intuative, and quicker, way to look up your contacts - for calling, email, mms and sms.

The cut n paste I will give you. I think it's incrediby strange that hasn't been built in.

But the thing I keep having to remind people is you can't honestly do a true comparrion between the iPhone and say, Nokia. Nokia have been making cell phones since they began, Apple have only ever made one! I bet you the first Nokia wasn't as good as it could be, look how far they have come. And look at what they do - telecommunications, and thats it. Apple aren't a telecommunications company, they are a computer hardware and software company. The iPhone was an experiment, and it was obviously successfull as look at how many were bought and in use. They were in use in countries they were never even released in!

To me, getting an iPhone would have nothing to do with being in the "in crowed" or "cool crowed". It would be getting a phone that suits exactly what I want from a phone : make and recieve calls, texts, have the best looking and best working internet interface, best email interface, best overal GUI and operation I have experienced with a "smartphone" Not to mention the best iPod apple has ever made (even tho I still have my trusty "old" ipod - but thats only cos I use nearly all the 60gb of storage which the iphone or itouch can match yet)

RS NISSAN - Why would I be trying to put him off? By explaining that for every criterior he wanted the iPhone supply's?

Pocket - I guess you are trying to see if I am an Apple fanboy? I guess I am to an extent, but not because I have immersed myself in Mac products. I still use PC's and Windows, I still have a Nokia, and only have an iPod as the sole apple product. Mainly because I want an iPhone that isn't tied to o2, and at the moment don't think it's the right time for me to make the switch to Mac and OS X to replace PC and Windows... I hate Windows, I always have, I think it's an awful OS in many many many ways, but thats not because I love Mac. Thats based on Windows own merits OS X is, IMO, a better home/end user OS, but thats by the by because I don't use it currently.

I did have an iBook for a while, and found it so much nicer to use, that was on 10.3 Puma and 10.4 Tiger aswell, not on the new 10.5 Leopard. Shame I had to give that back! Really nice notebook!

As for the Nokia N95 - had one of them, thought it was shit. I just don't like slide phones *shrug*

N96 looks much nicer, but the buttons are shit. And it's still slide. (based on a working demo phone, I have to admit I have not used a fully operational phone on a trial basis yet)

As for Blackberry - had a Blackberry Pearl for a while, didn't get on with it. However, I agree the blackberry Thunder looks (asthetically) very nice. Strange how it has a very similar look to that of the iPhone tho don't you think?

as for your hspda, id check with your provider to see if they have capped it (very likely)

lets see how long a iphone would last in a corporate enviroment ???
