YB is Cosworth's code for the engine, the third character is the derivative.

The 3 door Cosworth and 2wd Sapphire had a YBB engine, the RS500 had a YBD, the 4x4 Sapphires were YBJ and YBG units, and the Escorts were YBT and YBP.

The YBD was a development of the YBB, the YBJ and YBG were developments from the YBD and so on...

Basically, yes. But depends on who you ask

It's just a twin cam pinto with a hairdryer to some people.
