Avast and Spybot - both essential on a Windoze PC. CCleaner is also worth having for clearing temp files, cookies and other pointless shit.
If you're already infected download one of the emergency AV boot disks you can get online from various places.
I used to have an Amiga 1200 on dial-up. Guaranteed no viruses thankyouplease.

Linux and OSX then you don't have to deal with that crap

Spybot with the tea timer utility turned on.
Ad-aware as a backup to scan for stuff that spybot may miss
Both of the above are free.
I also have Avast Pro which has some malware checking built in so I'm pretty well covered. You pay a little for it, but its worth it.
If you have Windows Vista, you also have Windows Defender built in, it quietly sits there doing its thing in the background.

THREAD HIJACK
Jim - Do u know of a patch for winxp32 that I can apply to utilise the 4gb i added to my work laptop. Heard rumours there is one, but unless I upgrade to x64 I cant find anything.
3GB system memory is a ball-ache, especially with notepad

stu, it's a limitation of the kernel that it can only allocate 4gb of memory (inc. video memory etc. so 4gb - 0.6gb - 3.5gb etc.
the onyl thing you can do it go from 2GB to 3GB using the /3GB switch in boot.ini or use the x64 version.
the only problem ive ever really had with x64 XP is at work where i gotta sort out 64bit printer drivers, and the exchange 2003 admin tools wont run on x64

I used to use spybot and adaware, both very good and free, now use KASPERSKY, way better, so smooth, and don't need to do a thing.
I go on porn sites doing "research" all the time, never a problem, but it does intrude on some sites that it thinks may be dodgy, even some that are obviously not, so occasionally need to turn off temporarily.
Cost me Ł60, enough to do 3 compys, for a year.
