Police moan!
Is it me or do some really have nothing to do???
i just got pulled over in my run about for having a cut down plate, i am to get a new one made and fitted and get a mot centre to stamp it and then post it to the police!
i mean they stopped me for 15 mins asked me the usual but really just for a very slight cut down plate??? i've seen loads worse than that ignored. surely they should actually be looking for people with no insurance or actual criminals than people who pay for there cars properly...

They could spend time looking for people with no insurance or actual criminals if everyone had legal number plates and time was not wasted enforcing the laws in this area.
That's the thing about the police, they seem to have a problem with any law being broken

"Man causes accident from a small number plate" I bet you couldn't even find that on the internet anywhere....
Anyway joking aside, it is a pain in the arse when you get stopped, but thats the risk you take, 99% of us have knowingly done things we know are against the rules, small plates and tinted windows are the biggest by far I'd think. I should know PMSL.

I didn't realise it was illegal to have a cut down number plate as long as the characters were of the correct height and correctly spaced
I could be wrong though, last time I got stopped they never mentioned anything about mine, he just wanted to check it wasn't stolen as he said you dont see many of these out this time of the year.
He was a very nice bloke and we had a good old chin wag

To make all this enforceable every number plate suppliers must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and must show his name and post code on each number plate he supplies.
In addition you must supply proof of I.D.when buying plates ( preferrably a photocard driving licence ) and also proof that the number is yours( V5 registration document ( log book) , V750 (pink) or V778 (green) certificate for the registration number, V11 vehicle licence renewal, or V948).
The supplier must keep records of all the above and make them available to the police if requested.

I was of the opinion that not only the correct font, size and gap between the letters mattered but also the amount of reflective material around the letters.
Number plates also have to conform to the British Standard and if you have cut these down you have changed the specification of them, there is also a pretty good chance you have cut of the BS kite mark

Here is the DVLA link that explains it all http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/lea...mberplates.pdf
It states from what size the letters should be, what size margin (minimum) has to be set round the letters and also
The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
l The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
l The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
l A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters areoptional additions.
l There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

Even the football logos, playboy etc that people have on the end of the plate are illegal not that I want playboy on mine

there is no rule to say your umberplate must be a certain size, only the letters and their spacing should conform to the rules
so you can have a plate with a 1mm border around the numbers and letters and be perfectly fine with it
it's the coppers wanting to stop you for being in a flash car, i think they are secretly jelous that someone with odd sized numberplates can afford a big posh motor to put them on without having stolen them from a pimped up chav racer

the plates on my car are like 10 years old, they are plain and simple, with no logo's on them, so does that mean i need to buy new ones?
who's going to pay for them?

I stand corrected, thank you for enlightening me, but surely the police can not enforce the postcode and supplying outfit part as surely this only applies to number plates bought after the date that rule was introduced, as I was under the impression that is fairly recently.
If I'm mistaken then I will get my coat

I was stopped about 6 months ago for having a pretty small front plate(the letters were actually a good bit smaller). That was fair enough so I changed it to a full sized plate and got it stampted etc and sorted.
Just put a private reg on my car though which is 5 digits, so I got totally standard plates and just trimmed them down. So is that illegal? I'm sure I read somewhere that you could do that if there were less digits? They're a bunch of fucking bell-ends anyway...although just like everything in life, you get some nice guys and some tossers that enjoy belittleing you just because they have the power.
This is my plate below

Hence we trimmed the Cossie one down and never had a single problem as it was trimmed to be within the legal guidelines! ( the fact it was B111 made the left and right hand sides of the plate massive )
