A friend of mine does it and seems to do quite well out of it.
He was with Red but after 12 months got his own car and started up on his own, he was over 30 when he took his test though so I don't know what the minimum age is.

Lorraine, it must be hard work, wanting to grab the steering wheel, or press the breaks etc
I think i could do it, i suppose the best thing to do it try it, you only get out what you put in i suppose
Richard, that sounds good to me, but he must have had to work hard etc

I qualified and worked as a (self employed) driving instructor with BSM 20 years ago.
To be a registered Driving Instructor you need to have held a licence for 4 years, the reason they say 3 and a half is it will take you at least 6 months to qualify, by which time you will have 4 years driving experience.
Remember when they advertise "xxx For 40 hours work" that you won't get 40 hours continous work, the working hours will be spread over a much longer time in the day or days.
Some one working when I did, used to proof read manuscripts in the waiting times between lessons.
I gave up after less than a year for many reasons, some of;
Car too small (Metro, and me over 6ft)
Hours spread out too much, sometimes only working 2 hours in a day.
BSM at that time only guaranteed 25 hours, they were more into Instructor training than New driver training.
I realised I prefered working with tools (still do now) than sitting all day and looking smart.
However I did enjoy the time I did, the people I taught and especially what I learnt from the training.

You know what they say - if it looks too good to be true - it is!
I've seen them ads on telly with all those happy, wealthy instructors free to work when they feel like it.
The only positive thing is people will always need instructors. Bit like funeral directors in that respect... only with smaller cars.

I went into it, drive old lorries for 50 hours a week now starting at 4am, so there you go...
You could piss 30k a year as they say easily, then you've tax, petrol, car, insurance, unpaid driving between lessons, how much you reckon that leaves you...
If you do go for it, go with the AA for a car, was by far the best thing to do 5 years ago anyway.
